When it comes to purchasing a FFH that you ordered vs buying one that the dealer has in stock, how much room is there to negotiate on price? This will be the first new car I ever purchase (the previous ones were family hand-me downs) so I was wondering since I ordered the car tailored to my wants am I stuck paying MSRP or is there still that "5%" off MSRP that I should be negotiating to pay instead?

Try and get a X-plan pin! It's pretty easy to get one by signing up for a membership :) Just look it up on the blue oval forums.

I called about 15 or 20 dealerships,before making my decision. I got about 2000 off msrp ordering a titanium fusion. One thing I learned when shopping for price, is ask what the "out the door" price is, versus the car price. I think its best if you know exactly what you want, and call the internet sales person and ask them for their best price on this exact car, out the door. The dealership I ended up with was slightly higher on the car price, but they didn't have a Doc. fee, where everyone else was 599 for that. Get breakdowns sent to your email, and eliminate dealerships that don't want to work with you. Once you start getting numbers, see who will match or beat the price, especially if theres one specific dealer you are hoping to get. I drove my wife crazy doing this,and kind of obsessed with it, but my time is free. I had to fight her and the salesman the first dealer I went to, as shes sitting there telling me in front of him , :that's the price of the car" . I went back into that dealer later and told the salesman, "I bet you wish I wasn't there, so you guys could high five each other after bending her over with that msrp price.". I hat seeing people being taken advantage of. I hope that helps. I posted my price in another post if it helps.

Just go to kbb.com, click on "what should I pay for a new car" and then click "I know which car I want." After that you can pick the model (SE, Hybrid Titanium etc). Then you go on and pick the options etc you want. It shows you the invoice price and the msrp price for each option. Typically 1-3% over invoice is a "good" deal. My deal is about $50 over invoice but that was AFTER all taxes, tags and fees. Stick to your guns and you should be able to find a dealer that will work with you, remember, they still get a bunch of money from dealer holdback even if they sell it to you for invoice. And I agree with stevo that emailing the dealers is the way to go, once they have you on their turf it's a lot harder to work with them.

 

I forgot to add that I had $1,250 in rebates on my deal.

truecar.com give it a try and you can see what dealers in your area are giving the best deals, then get coupon to lock in the price.

This was the first time I ever factory-ordered a car, rather than buying from dealer stock, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I shopped around a number of dealers, and their responses ranged from a premium OVER MSRP, to MSRP, to $1,000 under MSRP. I ended up at my favorite dealer (even before closing the deal), who offered $500 over invoice. This ended up being UNDER the kbb.com target price. And at the time of delivery, there were no surprises or hidden charges.

See and I did kinda the opposite. I started at dealer 'A', got a written estimate of MSRP. I then spent about 1-2 weeks of going to two other dealers, in person, with the written quotes which each would beat in turn. I stopped at $300 over invoice and a set of front/rear mud flaps from the original dealer who really did all the 'selling' and test drives. I thought it was a fair price. I know they have a 3% hold back. I then added the $750 private cash and $1500 rebate to the deal. Since those come from Ford and not their pockets, they weren't bothered. So for a little time and small amount of gas, I saved about $3,000 and I'm ok with that. I could have saved time with x-plan as I'm a shareholder for greater than 6 months, but I'm real close to that price now, so, meh.

I went to a dealership that sells all cars for $50 over factory invoice. I also had an Xplan number and the Xplan was less that the $50 over invoice. Didn't get as much of a trade for my 12 year old Pontiac (172,000 miles) as I wanted, but I also didn't expect much so it wasn't a dissapointment. i also got $500 for buying a hybrid and an additional $750 coupon that Ford mailed to me.

When I ordered mine, I got it for invoice which was about $2,000 lower than MSRP. What they gave me for my trade was about $1500 less than KBB, so I guess its a wash. MY one rebate runs out on Apr. 1 hope I don't lose that.

I got the $750 pvt cash and a $500 rebate - how did you end up with a $1500 rebate? Sounds like you got a good deal though!

The end to my story.......I'm in the military and I had a strong feeling that my retail order (ordered 21NOV12) was not going to arrive prior to my permanent change of station move from Florida to Kentucky. Needless to say after 4 months of waiting my order arrived at the dealer in FL on March 8th. The FL dealership wanted to charge me an additional $350 to ship the car to KY on top of the Ford $795 fee when they my situation from the beginning. All in all (with taxes and extra delivery fee) the dearlership was asking $33,800 for the SE Hybrid with luxury, tech, and moonroof packages. I didn't want to pay extra for there screw up. They knew I was PCSing to KY when I placed the order. After a few days of going back and forth with them playing hardball I told them to keep the order and my $500 non-refundable deposit. All around they just had poor customer services (other dealer related issues not mentioned in this post). I went to my local Ford dealer in TN (I'm stationed on the KY/TN border) and bought one of their cars for $33,000 flat out the door; it's a black on black SE Hybrid, just like the one I ordered perviously, with luxury and tech packages, adaptive cruise control, reverse sensing system, active park assist, Ford all weather mats, and Simoniz. I can live without a moonroof. Its all about the small victories.

It's too late now, but I sure you could contact a local tv station's consumer report and mention the above facts and if THEY contacted the dealership... I would hope they would change to certain assist a member of our armed forces who through no fault of theirs moved prior to the delivery of the vehicle *OR* at least refund your deposit once the car sold...

Traded a Buick van 2006 for SE hybrid list price close to 35000. Made the deal for 22500. I was pleased with the deal.
