Miles to E

Recommended Posts

Can someone tell me how Miles to Empty is calculated? When i picked up my car it had 12 miles on it, 25 lifetime mpg, and 486 Miles to E. When i filled it up the first time, it had 387 miles, 35 lifetime, and 10 miles to empty. Obviously, i only wouldve driven less than 400 before empty, according to the car. I was getting 35-46 mpg for all of my driving. Does it base it on your instant economy, average, outside temp, etc?

It is based on your MPG history... in my prior FFH Owner Manual it said it was calculated based on the past 500 miles history, however in the 2013 FFH Owner Manual it doesn't specify a number.

At the very start it is calculated by how you drove on the last tank.and recalculates while your driving. I tested this out once when my 2010 said 25 miles to E I slowed down from 70MPH to 55MPH and kept checking as I drove. The miles to E kept growing as I drove along.

I haven't tried this on my 2013 as I have yet it get low enough. I get gas when it's below 1/4 tank and the price is right. And, because I know somebody out there will ask, I can actually fill the tank completely using Ford's two click strategy.. I had two or three bars showing before E on my last fill and it took 11 gallons to fill. It's reasonable that the 3 or 3 bars was an accurate measure of the remaining gas in the tank. I do think some of the non-hybrid cars got the 13.5 gas tanks,,,after all they did put the standard shift knobs in cars that had the luxury package.

BTW the Zone Manager confirmed that Ford did do this. His take is that they ran out of the "leather wrapped" (pleather) shift knobs and put the standard S and SE shift on cars so they wouldn't be held up longer than they already were. It took 1/2 hour for my dealer to replace the knob as they had to remove the top of the console.
