MPG Happy Talk

Recommended Posts

It's summertime, outside temp on the dash said 100 degrees, don't know if it was perfectly accurate but it was definitely warm and had the humidity mixed in.

I had the AC on (recirc), set at 70 with fan on second bar... was afraid the MPG would suffer today but was able to use the secret weapon of the rural podunk road that rides like a roller coaster... so was able to still get 52.8 MPG over the 60 miles.

So now I'm ambivalent about this software update thing - does it improve things, or have a negative effect. I guess I'll watch posts from some other guinea pigs on here and see.

I thought for sure I was going to get crappy MPG this morning since I needed the AC. It may only be 73, but it is so humid that just breathing makes you sweat. Still managed 44.7 in to work, so it was less than a 1 MPG difference. I can live with that. My wife had the car yesterday and killed the MPG, don't know how she only managed 41 MPG, might be her braking, I noticed she doesn't brake early enough, yet some how managed to get a decent brake score. Other drivers tend to make her nervous too when they ride her bumper. She also tends to get anxious when some bozo in front of her cant do the speed limit and she doesn't pay attention to her driving then as much as she should. Other times though she can do better than me. so go figure.

My wife gets the same way. She usually averages 95% or so for her brake score just because she doesn't start braking early enough. She also tends to get nervous in traffic and then hit the gas pedal really hard when it isn't necessary, especially when merging. :peelout:She also doesn't really pay attention to the lights up ahead so she'll take off like normal even when the next light is read not paying attention to that like I do. She's been driving the car all week while I've been walking to work. Tomorrow I have to go down to Owatonna so we'll see how much she's killed the gas mileage for this tank. Last time I checked it was still up near 50 MPG. I bet it won't be now :(

Yeah, we can love em to death, but when it comes to constructive criticism, its TALK TO THE HAND! :) :talkhand:

105 F here when you factor in the humidity. I got my worst mpg to work this late morning. Damn you a/c and your mpg sucking ways!

I'm with you Jeff, I'm not going first on this update. I can't imagine my car performing any better than it is right now and it's a Job 1 car. I truly hope the update helps the under-performing cars though.

I don't normally post in this "Happy Talk" thread but yesterday I was very impressed by the performance of my FFH, had to take a road trip from northern VA to northern MD, 95 miles each way, going was during the DC rush hour at 85 degrees and coming back was during the middle of the day at 95 degrees, ran the AC both ways set to 76 - 78, which was more than comfortable and got 46.6 going and 47.2 coming back. Both journeys were made running up to 70mph.

Once over 62 and getting the HVB up to a high state of charge this car is very efficient. Impressed

Ok I had a jaw dropping moment. I did not expect to see this, Especially after getting a measly 38.2 yesterday driving home with the AC on. Drove in this morning with the windows open, as it wasnt too bad, still comfortable enough, but can feel that it will be miserable today. I usually get 44-47 in the morning, the latter being rare, mostly 44.

Nice one I think there is weather sweet spot for our cars in order to get exceptional mileage once and a while. I usually get between 50 and 52 but today 3 more. It will offset the afternoon commute when it will be hot and sticky which runs anywhere from 42 to 48 MPG.

I had made a post a couple of days ago excited about the software updates that Ford is planning. Although afterwards I realized that this was probably the wrong place to post that article as everyone here seems very happy with their fuel economy and are already meeting or exceeding the EPA numbers. I currently do not own a new Fusion Hybrid but have been drooling over them since they came out and am currently getting 18MPG in my current commute of 120 miles a day...OUCH. After all of your positive posts I am thinking I may need to pull the trigger on a new Fusion. It looks like my commute would be similar to gadgetguy as I drive alot of highway miles where the posted speed limit is 70 (real flow of traffic 70-80 mph) and would be thrilled if I could average around 40MPG. Keep up the good work guys and gals and it's inspiring to read your posts! Hopefully someday I will be posting awesome mileage pics of my own! :)

Even if you got 36 in one, you would be doubling your MPG, and using HALF as much fuel!

Hope that helps your decision! :)

You should send a PM to malibu3105 - hybrid owner from your area, you may be neighbors and maybe he can assist with dealer to choose/avoid or whatever else...

So true...! I know...it really is a no-brainer! For awhile i was trying to decide if I would do better with a Focus considering the percentage of higher freeway speeds I do but you guys are definetely swaying me towards the Fusion...and it's such a great looking car!

Thanks Jeff for the information! Actually i've already got a Ford dealer in mind, that's the easy part because I work for one! So I get to drool over the cars every day!

What are you waiting for if I would be working for a ford dealer there wouldn't be a second of question as long you can afford it of course.

In other posts, I mentioned that I was taking my first road trip with extended driving above 62 mph. This car is freaking amazing!

215 miles with only 6.7 EV miles at 72mph. This was traveling on I40 west in eastern TN over some hills.

Last fill up at my destination.

Instant MPG that I set 720 miles earlier.

I wonder why I got an extra 8.8 MPG.

It's only fractions you are looking at here. You should calculate the actual gallons used.

0.0136 gal vs. 0.0123 gal

But of course acdii is right it could be the 1% in braking score or a wiggle with the big toe. ;-)

The sad thing is, this ends up as one of my worst fill-ups overall. I think it's due to the rain - people here drive like jerks in the rain. Some drive too fast, causing accidents. Then it takes 2-3x to get through the traffic light. My overall mpg for this tankful at 80 miles driven is only about 35 mpg. I definitely won't make it into the 500 mile club. FusionRose, you're my idol!

One thing I think we'd all suggest is to do an extended test drive in a FFH so that you can take it home and drive in on your commute. See what the MPGs are like driving from home to work and back since that's probably a big chunk of your miles. Drive to any other frequest destinations so you can see how it performs in those situations too. That way you won't be surprised after you buy a car. I'd suggest doing the same thing with any other car you're considering. You could do the same thing with a Focus and then see how much of a mileage difference there is between it and the FFH. Then based on those numbers you can have "real world" data to make a decision that you'll be happy with.
