Goes to show, that NAV unit dont know jack!

However, the one in my 2010, yep it does, I took its Eco route(didn't even know it had it) one day to a customer site and got 56 MPG.

What's weird is, look at my EV miles compared to total miles, shouldn't I come out at a much much higher mpg rating?? Really strange. The only thing I can say is a majority of the trip was uphill, maybe that's what hurt my mpg.

[/url]

Yes, that is very weird. Maybe the MPG computer is not very accurate when going uphill?

What were your instant MPG readings when not in EV mode?

I live in flat territory, so I have no experience with going uphill, but if you were in EV mode for so long, it couldn't have been too taxing.

Well when going uphill not in EV the instant mpg was showing below 20 and sometimes not even registering, like it was getting less than 1mph ha. I'm pretty confident I could get 50+ in a relatively flat area but I guess it's not in the cards in my area. I am still getting about 45 and as high as 49.7 on one occasion. It's just funny how the eco route wasn't so Eco. Although like I said it did only use .3 gallons of gas as opposed to my usual .4 to work.

Not sure if my quick calculations are correct it would mean that the ICE returned only around 11MPG. Which seems about right when looking at driving uphill with a very depleted HVB. It appears that if your HVB SOC is very low the car wants to recharge it more aggressively, now throw in the fact that you are going uphill and your MPGs lock like that.

Yeah that makes sense. My SOC was low the entire time.

If you drive the same road again maybe you can try a different cycle where you force the ICE to run in order to charge the HVB while going downhill for example. It should be relatively easy when the SOC is very low and in his case you don't combine to heavy loads (uphill & charging) resulting in bad MPG.

Best morning commute so far since it has warmed up, was in the mid 50's on a cold start. Lifetime is up to 42.0 after surviving the winter right around 40.

Best morning for me yet, too. Temp was about 60 when I started, but that's happened before and I didn't see this kind of result. Something in the past day has changed for the better, I got 40 MPG on the way home yesterday when my norm is around 38.

So I decided to try the "Eco route" to work today. My normal route is usually 20ish miles and I get 44-45 mpg. Today's "Eco route" was 13 miles and I got 35 mpg. I used .1 gallon less fuel but I was somehow thinking the Eco would mean more mpg. Boooooo Eco route.

If you used less gas then isn't it better? What happens if you take the same route home and go downhill? A good comparison would be to try your highway route both ways and then eco route both ways and compare. You don't just want to compare MPGs but also fuel consumption, time and if one route is more stressful than the other

Now that's an interesting result! 55.8 MPG is awesome especially with only 6.6 EV miles. Here is my morning drive all country highways max speed 50 MPH as you can see I got almost 2/3 EV but "only" 51 MPG

Yeah but different route; shorter and not going to the office this morning. I still wanna see the magic 51 MPG on my regular commute.

Yeah, I'm used to seeing around 50-52 on my morning drive (It's much more downhill highway driving than the return trip, when I average 38, and lately a little higher). I'm not sure what changed this morning to get me 5 extra MPGs, but I'll take it.

So after reading about the SOC, I decided to drive the first 3/4 of a mile this morning charging up the HVB since it's always below 1/4 when I start the car each morning. Well, I got it to around 3/4 and on my drive to work it really felt like it was running on EV for the majority of the time. Even when it wasn't in EV the ICE instant mpg was showing between 20 and 40 most of the time. So when I got to work I was expecting to see the big 50+, instead I get this :-(. I'm doomed for the 44-45 mpg to work no matter what. That's ok though.

@ riggo

Check the fuel economy display periodically to see how you are doing along the way; I have mine set to 6 min and the first bar is always low probably around 25 MPG but after that I can keep it at 45+ MPG.

Maybe you went a little bit to far with SOC maybe 50 % is good enough; I only get to 3/4 when driving on the interstate. I will show you what I mean in a pictures on my way back home but probably in the tips and trick thread.

Ok I know I haven't posted much lately but I have been watching the stream. I have been stuck in the 40-42 mpg range and can't seem to get out of it so there hasn't been anything new and exciting to report. I see all these 36+ mile commute posts with 50-55 mpg and wonder what I could do different other than push my car at times lol..

I did get some decent mpg this morning and my speed was pretty steady at 55-65 mph. I know interstate speeds will suffer and i am going to try and use an alternate city route next week to see how it compares.

Here is this mornings commute.

20130517_074153.jpg

I'm not unhappy at all just would like to get a tad better.

Also when I filled last time my actual gallons and what the computer said were pretty much identical. Yesterday when I filled up the computer showed 8.64 gallons and my actual was 9.56 and like last tie I did not top off???? So what I showed as being a decent 41.6 mpg for the tank turned out to be a so so 37.7 mpg for the tank.

That's odd to me considering lat fill up the numbers were practically identical.

I feel like getting 50+ mpg isn't really possible on highways if you're going the norm 60ish mph. I want to try my route to work in the middle of the night going no more than 50 mph but that requires me to waste a night which I'm not up to :) . I'm still really happy with my 44-45 mpg to work everyday, although I do get jealous of the 50+'ers out there. I think most of us could get the 50+ with the right terrain, speed and weather.

I posted my theory on the Hybrid Tips & Tricks thread but here is my return trip from the customer. I think the main difference between the morning and afternoon commute is the elevation; it's more downhill in the morning and uphill in the afternoon.

Since the customer is located the same basic direction the results are very similar; about 3 - 4 MPG less coming home.

It wasn't all the way home since I had to stop at Aldi but even with the additional 3.7 miles the total resulted in 48.4 MPG.

If you use Empower or engage or any of the acreens on the left hand side, you can hold the OK button down until the Avg MPG resets. I do this before almost every trip. Then you can see your mileage real time. I usually know what my mileage will be by comparing how the Average is doing as I pass certain landmarks. This morning I was at 38 where yesterday I was at 42 at a certain turnoff.I knew it wouldn't be a stellar commute. It is very informative.

I feel I am going to settle in the mid to low 40s and that is fine by me. Think about it, that is awesome mileage. The 50s you see are usually at lower speeds, and commutes that are very favorable to achieving those numbers.

Today, summer has arrived in Houston. No more running without A/C. I'm sure that will have an effect on mileage too.

For me when I get the new HyTi anywhere between 38 and 43 and I will be happy with it. Thats Real MPG not the dash stuff. If it gets that then its right on par with the old car, and after there are 40K miles on the new one, THEN I will be expecting higher numbers.

Here's a trip from this morning through the city to St Paul to the model train museum where I was volunteering today. This morning it was in the 50s and raining heavy the whole trip.

null_zps952cc9fd.jpg

Coming home tonight trying a slightly different all city route

Both trips started with a cold engine. Tonight coming home it was in the 80s so the AC was running
