MPG Happy Talk

Recommended Posts

So just to see if mine is also capable of such crazy MPG numbers I tried my best coming back from dinner tonight.

Luckily there was nobody behind me ?

Of course no comparison to driving 10+ miles AND returning 50+ or even 70+ MPG numbers.

That's great. About the same weather here but my MPG for a couple trips was terrible.

We have been locked into town short trip driving for the last week and I have a thread i want to start on that in a few days as I have made some interesting observations. But this morning we took a 40 mile round trip cruise down I 25 to do a test of the hilly terrain 70 verses 60 argument. Sorry, I don't have any pictures as I forgot my camera, but at 70 the car was a dream to drive. Ran the ICE constantly, kept the battery at 3/4 or higher all the way and delivered about 38 MPG over 40 miles (20 one way and then return over the same route). We then repeated the process at 60 MPH with results of 46 going south and 42 going north for a combined 44 at 60. Using ECO Cruise and just let the car do what it wanted.

to me this is awesome in either mode. I will make more tests as the weeks go by and post them if peeps want to see. (I will try to remember my camera ..... :)).

Again, I will start a thread about short trips and pre starting soon!

I'm looking forward to your analysis and thoughts. A lot of us probably don't get around to checking for new threads very often but are following this one, so please post a link here to your analysis once you start that thread.

That is excellent freeway MPG!

Well you guys may have me beat in city driving, but catch me if you can on highway! 42+ every single time 65-70 MPH.

Every time I drive down to Bolingbrook from Algonquin I get at least 42 MPG, last time I got 46.

Yes, we thought so as well. We have very mild year 'round weather, but it can be in the 20's at times in winter which of course I haven't experienced yet. I have found. and built a technique, for morning cold start that makes the difference of high 40's to low 50's with warm up start as compaired to 30's without over a 2 mile non stop round trip. It is very consistent in results. I hope to create videos of both operations to prove the point. I will let you know as soon as I can get it all together.

The "dark" side is that it is very touchy as to how long you keep the engine running before you start your trip. Too long and mileage suffers because you burned too much in the DW, too little and you use too much ICE on the way. I am trying to "dial it in" so I can show a consistent figure. I can always do better than just "start and go" but I am trying to maximize the idea. I am sure everyone will need to adjust the concept for your particular needs, but I am convinced that the idea is sound.

Patience Grasshopper(s), I will have something soon :)

What amazes me, is that I can easily get 50 to 60 MPG across town once the engine is warm. It is about 4 miles across town where you go down a long steep hill and then have to climb back out on the other side of town the same height and distance, but I can get the above MPG every time, when the engine is warm. I wonder why they insist the ICE runs when cold .... Hmmmm

Anyone know where the temp sensor is???? :play:

I know people say that these short high MPG trips don't mean a whole lot but it looks so cool!!! Stayed in EV almost the whole way to church this morning and let it warm up a good 10 min before we left the house!!! :banvictory: :headspin:

Now that is what I am talking about! Well done!

As for not meaning much, if you do even just one a day, in my case that is 60 miles a month at 40+ MPG....that means something .... :)

Agree! I don't necessarily believe that because it all counts in the big picture!

My highway mileage is starting to improve! The trip to my parents this weekend was 40.5, but on the way back it's 42.2 :) I set ACC @ 65 MPH and let it do it's thing. About 12 of those miles are at 50 MPH.

Does this include the ICE idling warm up time?

I'm consistently getting low-mid 40's now - both city and highway:

Yep, I get exactly the same. Rarely I'll get over 47 but for the most part I'm hovering around 44 mpg. The weather needs to start warming up in the Northeast! It is May 6th and feels like Fall going into Winter.

Actually, the weather here is perfect! Low 70's, slight breeze :) It was 60 this morning.
