The autonomous car

This car is about 90% of a self-driving car. With the lane departure assist it can recognize the road lines and steer by its self. The BLIS can detect when a there are cars either side and the radar cruze control can break and accelerate the car. SatNav informs the car on where you want to go. My guess is that it is the lawyers not the technology that is stopping the integration of these systems.

well, when the lines disappear on the road, the lane keeping shuts down. There are many other reasons besides lawyers keeping it from driving itself, weather affects the camera, rain and snow affect the radar, and road maintenance, the lines on the road can all make the system not work correctly, but it is pretty dang cool to be able to sit back, relax and let the car do part of the driving.

I saw a Video from Ford on YouTube that demonstrated a car that could drive itself in stop and go traffic. I'm sure that's no more than 1-3yrs from being a reality.

I'd be willing to bet the 2014 Fusion gains the ability to park itself in in regular parking spots and not only parallel like it can now.

The Lincoln MKZ is the same platform as the Fusion and has lane keeping assist and adaptive cruise control.

I like the message it puts up on the display, then you take your hands of the wheel and it corrects. It must be looking for resistance feedback in the wheel when correcting.

A salesman I was dealing with (didn't buy my car from him) went as far as to tell me the Fusion can sense how hard you hold/squeeze the steering wheel. I was like HAHA I'm not buying a Fusion from you :)

he was half right. It can tell if you have your hands on the wheel or not based on the pressure you exert. if you very lightly touch the wheel, still have control, but are very lightly steering, it will yell at you.

I don't typically put a lot of pressure on it.. Can the warning be turned off?

I was driving the other day tapping both sets of fingers on the front of the steering wheel and the car yelled at me. I wonder what the parameter is that gets the cars to suggest a rest?

Did you have the lane correct turned on or just the warning of drifting across the lane (There are several settings for this)? I can assure you there is a warning there, but I think you need the correction on and you need to start crossing the lane.

Mine yelled at me even with my hands on the wheel, but I can drive it with such a light touch that it thought my hands were off. It detect slight movements that you normally do when driving, and when they stop, then it dings and flashes the dash.

 

The Driver alert though I turned that thing off it was always going off.

Is anyone using Active Parking Assist on a regular basis? I am afraid of using it for the fear of hitting other cars or damaging my own. It was not an option I would have chosen but I couldn't get the car with the exact color combo and exact options I wanted without having to wit for two months.

It works fine, if the sensors are blocked it wont attempt to park itself, but you are still ultimately in control with the gas and brake, let the car do the steering and it parks itself very well. I was impressed the one time I used it. Have not had the need to since then, unless I want to setup some cars to use it with, very few places around me have that kind of parking. Biggest irony, the dealers out by me all have park assist, with no where to use it, but no adaptive cruise that would be far more useful out here with the rural highways.

I used the active parking assist with my in he car. She was giggling and thoroughly impressed the car's ability to park itself. And she is the one who hates American cars. She hates no more, she is the biggest fan of FFH now!
