Engine block heater

Recommended Posts

No I don't believe so, from looking at the ordering sheet that a salesman gave me, the block heater and daytime running lights are things that is only available on Fleet Vehicles. Of course orders going to Canada may be different, this sheet was just for US orders.

I believe the engine block heater is standard. The window sticker for my ordered FFH states "Engine block heater" "No charge" Hope this helps. You can look at my window sticker for the features under my previous post.

I was in town today and checked the Fusions at the Ford Dealer. They had three (3) base SE fusions, gasoline. All had the engine block heater. The plug is located on the drivers side fog light area. Strange place for the plug I thought. I never looked at the window stickers and these were not Hybrids.

well i don't have my window sticker yet just the VIN. but all the stickers I have looked at in the Chicago area and the couple I test drove in each trim none had a block heater listed. only no charge we had was front license plate as illinois law requires both front and rear plates.

If I'm supposed to get one, I want it.... Even if I'll only need it once or twice lol

Fordparts.com has the engine block heater parts available for order. I think its just the heater itself and then the plug/wire. I assume it xan be fitted to any Fusion, but im not sure on the labor charge as i think the coolant has to be at least partially drained and refilled.

It just sticks on the bottom of oil pan and you just partually remove bottom engine cover and reachin and stick it on. Simple, just find a spot easy to install plug to plugin extension cord.

My 2010 has one, but never used it. I used it on my F350 for a couple times, and then got my electric bill. Gas is cheaper even at $4 a gallon.

Really.. it was that much more for your electric bill, how long do you have to keep it plugged in?

The oil pan heater is different from an engine block heater. The engine block heater is installed directly into the block in place of one of the freeze plugs and heats the coolant in the block, which is particularly useful on diesel motors in cold weather because it helps the motor get to operating temperature very quickly versus a cold start. The oil pan heater would help reduce viscosity of cold oil, allowing less effort by the motors moving parts. I'm wondering which is more beneficial to a hybrid Fusion's FE when the gas motor is used sparingly in city driving or short trips...

I had mine on a timer to start at 4AM so it was on for 3 hours. It wasnt cheap, it was 1500 watts. There was only 1 time in the 10 years owning it when I truly needed it, had the truck parked outside in front of the garage and it would not start, plugged it in and four hours later fired up. Parked inside even on the coldest of days never needed it.

Since most of us have had issues this winter with lower MPG due to the time it takes the ICE to warm the coolant, I think making the engine block heater standard equipment, or at least an option, on all future FFHs would be a good idea. Electricity costs may wash out any dollar gain, but having immediate warm air in the mornings, I feel, would make the system worth it.

The block heaters they use in cars are a lot smaller than than the 1500W heaters they put in diesel trucks. I would still only use one on a timer to reduce the electric bill. The block heater is too small to provide "immediate heat" but it's more like "short delay heat". I wrote a detailed article about block heaters about a year ago on FFF: http://www.fordfusionforum.com/topic/7355-about-block-heaters/

I don't have a FFH, but my guess would be they use the same size element in all Fusions.
