How do I make the ICE run for checking exhaust, rattles, ect?

Recommended Posts

Is there a way to start the engine and let it idle so I can check on the exhaust system?

You just press the gas peddle after starting the car. If you have two people one can keep their foot on thegaswhile the other looks for the problem. During cold temperatures turning on the heater will get the ice running also.

If you have a noise you can hear while driving slowly putting it in LOW range keeps the ICE running almost constantly. I have been trying to find a buzz I get when I go from load or unload the ICE. Running about 7 mph in LOW lets me gas on gas off to get the vibration. Still haven't found it but it is much louder when the ICE is cold so I am thinking somewher in the exhaust system now. Sounds like something loose inside one of the cans in the exhaust. Of course, the service man couldn't hear it when I took him for a ride.

My overhead glass holder buzzes, drives us nuts. I open it and close it and it stops for a while.

Got this from a Ford Tech on a Mustang Forum. It works on my 2010 Milan Hy:

This is the procedure, carry out the following sequence EXACTLY to activate the engine running diagnostic mode:

• apply the parking brake
• place the gear selector in the PARK position
• ignition in the OFF position
NOTICE: Do not start the engine.
• ignition in the ON position with the engine OFF
• within 5 seconds of the ignition in the ON position, fully apply the accelerator pedal and hold for
10 seconds
• within 5 seconds release the accelerator pedal, shift the gear selector to the DRIVE position and
fully apply the accelerator pedal
• hold the accelerator pedal fully applied for 10 seconds
• release the accelerator pedal and shift the gear selector to the PARK position
If the sequence is correctly executed the powertrain malfunction indicator (wrench) flashes once
per second when the gear selector is shifted to the PARK position. The engine may be then started by
cycling the ignition to the START position as you would normally do to start the car.
The PCM exits the engine running diagnostic mode when the gear
selector is shifted to any gear other than PARK, when the ignition is turned to the OFF or ACC
position, or the powertrain or hybrid-electric system voltage exceeds calibrated limits.
