5000 mi Checkup

Recommended Posts

I just wanted to report my findings on servicing my FFH at it's 5000 mi recommended service.

Took the car in on Christmas Eve to the local Ford dealer where I bought it. Had overall a great experience! I also received a card in the mail from them for a free oil change and multi-point inspection.

The FFH had 4500 miles and we are taking it on a trip this week, so I decided to get it in for the checkup. The manual lists multi-point inspection and rotate tires as the only two things that are recommended for service at this time. I (and the dealer) thought a tire rotate was premature, and we elected to not do it now, but to do it on the next one. Or I can do it myself at 7500 mi. I have access to a lift.

I know the oil change timeframe is a huge debate, but here's why I think it's important to change it BY 5000 mi and why I did it at the service. The engine is breaking in, rings are setting and seals are sealing. I've always read / and believed, that the first oil change is the most critical. I know Ford says 10,000 miles OR annualy in the manual, but I think that may be a touch too long for the first oil change. Better safe than sorry I think. Besides, driving in the Vegas heat this past summer it tough on cars, and everything I read says that it's better to change oil sooner when driving in those conditions.

Anyway, I had a good experience, had a great coupon (the whole thing ended up costing me $0.00), and I feel that it was important to have the critical Hybrid components and the car looked at by professionals since it came out of the factory and has been working hard for me since I drove it off the lot. Overall it was an hour of my time, she's got fresh oil, and everything has checked out mechanically. Good car!

I went to my local dealer's service drive for my annual oil change a few months ago, they pointed me to their Quick Lane center (same lot, 100 yards away) 4500 miles but 12 months for me so it was time anyway no tire rotate yet so total charge was $ 0.00 (coupon) ((had them run as Oasis report, showed brake update needed but they said nothing so neither did I)) (((if it ain't broke don't fix it is my motto, zero problem here))) but next time will need state inspection, oil filter, rotate, $ 200.00 is my guess rant.gif

I've mostly always changed the oil in my cars every 3,000 miles. That's the interval I'm keeping to on my '07 RAV4, even though Toyota recommends a 5K interval. At the same time, I'm "only" changing the oil in our '00 Volvo S70 every 5,000 miles, because our mechanic uses a synthetic oil designed for older cars and every 3K is too soon to change it. I'm glad to hear that your first 5,000 miles in your new FFH have been trouble-free.
