USB Port Questions

OK, so I bought a 2010 Fusion SEL and I love the car except for the way the USB port is setup in the console. With it sticking straight out I am afraid my USB stick will get broken. I just leave it in the so I don't have to mess with connecting it all the time. I wish they had nothed out a little bit of the console interior and configured the port to hold a USB stick vertically and flatter against the side then horizontally....poor design there...

 

Anyway my question is this, are there other USB ports anywhere on the car for diagnostics? I had heard that some people had found other USB ports and plugged a stick into those to avoid the concern I mentioned earlier. I checked under the dash but did not see one. Has anyone else heard of this?

A really simple solution.... I got a 12 inch USB extension cord, plug it into the jack and plug my USB stick into the cord. Makes it real easy to change the stick and I just drop it onto the console. Finds its way to the bottom and just sits there.

A few months ago I finished a nice mod to my 2010 SEL, adding an aux power port, and 2nd USB slot to the centre dash console...which was great, until the vehicle was stolen. Insurance paid for a Sport though. :)

 

The sync unit itself sits behind the lower centre console, accessible from the back seat. The cover has the two LEDs on it, be careful to only pull from the bottom of the panel, it's wedged in tight and the plastic tabs on top are brittle. You'll need a mini-USB cable, and a female-female adapter if you want to make use of it. You'll probably have to shave off a bit of the plastic cable housing, there's a notch into one corner of the socket. Also, the only way I found to access it was the voice recognition system, by saying 'USB 2'.
