Navigation map updates; how are they done and cost?

Recommended Posts

I'm considering a 2011 Fusion SEL with navigation but wonder how are the annual map updates done and what is the cost?

For my 2007 Altima I can purchase a new DVD every year for $129 and just pop it in place of the old DVD.

If the 2011 still uses the old DVD based nav then it costs $199 for the new DVD from Navteq. If it uses the new SD card (only on MyFordTouch vehicles and I don't think the Fusion gets that yet) then it might be cheaper and would certainly be different.

Or it could use a "hard drive" system (like my Genesis Tech and I understand the new Buick) that is a nightmare to update. With the hard drive update, you don't own the disc. The dealer buys the disc from the manufacturer, then charges you "beaucoup bucks" (aprox $250) and it takes four to six hours to update the harddrive.

My 07 MKZ uses the simple DVD system, Purchase for $199, remove the old disc and insert new disc. Simple. The only thing I don't like about the MKZ screen is that being a touch screen, some areas are worn out from touching, plus the finger prints always make it look dirty. Only good thing on the Genesis Tech is that I never have to touch the screen. Always clean. (but what a pain in the "butt")

Uh, yea that's the way it is on the initial HDD versions.

I have a 2010 Fusion with the HDD and you just have to purchase a new DVD from Navteq for $199, and it comes with instructions with how to install it. Basically just insert the DVD and let it go. AFter a while, you can turn the car off and it will continue on it's own, it takes a couple hours to complete but there's nothing to do other than wait. Pretty simple process.

Once it's done, the HDD is updated and the DVD can be stored away.

Unfortunatly I don't "think" it can be used for multiple cars as when you order it you have to tell Navteq the application number of your unique NAV then they send you a unique DVD for your car with your software lisence on it. Apparently it will only work on that navigation unit and not any other one.

Cheers...

D.
