First problem!

Recommended Posts

My FFH has 11000 miles on it and the only glitch it has had was the reset at about 2500 miles until about four weeks ago when the wrench light came on. I stopped the car and restarted it and all was well for a couple of weeks when it did it again but this time I had a check engine light after restarting although the car ran fine. I called my Ford dealer and he said to bring it in. When I started it the next morning to carry it to them all lights were off and it ran fine. They could find no codes are any problem so they did do the software upgrade and told me to drive it and see what happened. All was well for over a week until last Friday when the wrench light came on again. When the wrench light is on there is no EV mode at all. The engine even runs all the time when the car is stopped. I just talked with them and they have been on the phone with a Ford engineer checking to find the problem. The engineer wanted to send them some relay and try it to see if that would fix it. The manager told Ford he wanted the car fixed and not to start trying things so the engineer said he would get approval to ship a new HV battery which would replace all the components that had to do with the problem. It should take a couple of hours to get approval and they would rush ship a battery.

I will post more when I know more.

It is extremely unlikely that a "check engine light" or "wrench" light would come on with no code stored.

Yes, but somehow it must have cleared. The second time I hooked my scanguage to it and got a P0B24 code which has to do wtih HV battery voltage unstable. The people at the dealer said they got a bunch of codes the second time including the one I got.

Lee,

There was a time...ohh maybe up until November last year........that I would have agreed with you 100%. doh.gif

cgul,

Glad to see the Service at the Dealership was able to get codes the second time. Sending a new battery huh? That's a big step for Ford. The Manager of that Dealership earned their pay for stepping in that way. They could have diagnosed you to death.headspin.gif

It is apparent that dealer training in retrieving trouble codes has been in some cases unsatisfactory. Whether they lie or truly can not find them I don't know. It may be some of both. It would seem that it would not be in their interest to deny problems in vehicles under warranty for which they are re-reimbursed by the manufacturer. Perhaps they are not reimbursed enough. We have had reports in this forum about the brake glitches that left no codes but upon reexamination were found in a different area. Training seems the most likely problem.

I think it is the Ford diagnostic software. It does not display everything that pulls down out of the ODBC. It filters and interprets it. Unfortunately it seems that Ford relates "unexpected" to "filtered out". When the tech tells the software to display everything it spits out too much, making finding the problems difficult.

The new battery is on the way! I don't know where it is coming from but it won't be here until Wednesday. It was shipped this last Wednesday so their rush shipment takes a week I guess. I sure hope it fixes the problem. I don't think the battery itself is bad but maybe some of the controls for the battery which are part of the battery assembly. Maybe I will get the car back next Thursday. They loaned me a 2010 Fusion SEL with everything but the Nav. to drive. It is an I4 six speed auto and sure is strange driving after the hybrid.

The new HVTB came in today and I now have the car back! I picked it up about four this evening and only drove it about 15 miles home but all is well. Where the state of charge gauge would go all the way to the top line and then drop very fast when and if the car would go in EV mode now it is very steady and EV mode seems to be working very well.

Part of the work order says "Pinpoint test showed HVTB has an unstable cell. Prior approval paazn removed and replaced HVTB and retested OK."

I am very pleased with my Ford dealer and the way they handled this problem. No patch work or trying to fix the old battery but just get a new one and replace it

.

I sure hope this is the last of this problems. By the way, every thing about the setup was reset to default and all MPG readings was zero.

So I am driving my FFH again!

The first battery failure noted here. This will be interesting. This would probably be an "infant mortality" event. I suspect this HVB will be carefully dissected. We'll probably never read the post-mortem though. In the middle '90s, Prius had a lot of pre-production battery failures that caused open circuits and disabled the test cars. It was traced to lint from the battery factory workers uniforms that got into the sealed ( D-sized ) cells and caused the cell to fail open circuited a few months after manufacture. Since many hybrid HVBs are cells in series, an open circuit disables the vehicle as electricity is required to control the transmission. Toyota-Panasonic then made the cells in "Clean-room" factories. This was not one of those failures as the vehicle continued to operate. Good luck with it!

I had a few errands to run this morning and then my wife and I went for a little ride in the country this afternoon. Everything seems to be working perfect in the car now so I am ready to say it is fixed. Maybe this won't happen to any of us again.

I took a picture of the MPG on our little ride.

I have had no problems at all with the car since the hvb was replaced. I now have almost 24,000 miles on the car. There had to be some flaw in the original hvb but the car did great until it began to fail. It went from normal to failure in about 1000 miles. I get great mpg around town and also in the low 40s on the freeway during warm weather (not hot weather). Cold weather hurts the milage most. I have kept up with fuel usage with a computer program and my mpg for 23,640 miles is 39.5. My mpg always checks between 1 and 3 less than the car's computer shows but the 39.5 for almost 24000 miles is fine with me. I am very happy with the car, it is much better than the Toyota Camry hybrid I put 50 something thousand miles on and traded fot this FFH.

Charles, Why didn't you like the TCH? I'm considering both of them right now.

Steve

I liked the TCH ok but thought the FFH was much better and a lot more refined than the TCH. You need to drive both and make up your mind which you like.
