Question on avg mpg above leaf/histogram

Does anyone know what the avg mpg reading about the leaves/histogram section of the dashboard is based on? It does not seem to correlate with the overall vehicle mpg, the instantaneous mpg, or the 1, 2, or 6 minute histogram mpg. It appears to be a running average over a longer period than the individual histogram bars, but shorter than the overall vehicle mpg. Does anyone know the time period over which this is averaged?

I always assumed it it MPG since you reset it the last time.

I think it is tied to one of the two trip meters. I reset one of the trip meters while driving and that reset.

The owner's manual says:

 

Average fuel economy: Your average fuel economy in miles/gallon will

be displayed at the top right of your vehicle’s instrument cluster or in

liters/100 km at the lower right along with the efficiency leaves, history

graph or no display (shown previously with history graph). You may

reset this average at any time. Refer to Message center in this chapter

for more information on the average fuel economy display mode.

 

Is this referring to a reset of the "long term fuel economy"? The avg mpg value in the upper right is not the

same as the "long term fuel economy" value which appears in the trip report.

The avg. fuel economy is reset from the reset button on the steering wheel when displaying avg. mpg on the info screen. The long term economy is reset in the resets screen of the menu.
