Strange noise today

Recommended Posts

I was not in the car. My wife reported to me that when she started the car there was a loud "pop" from the rear and the car shuttered. She first thought of some problem with the hybrid battery. No warning lights on dash and the dealer could fine nothing wrong. Hasn't done it in several starts since. Could it have been a detonation in the exhaust system? I checked and the exhaust system is still there. lol

I offer this total speculation of no claimed merit: The previous time it was run, you pulled into the garage in EV mode, but the fuel injectors weren't fully off, gas got into the exhaust system, specifically the catalytic converter. When you started the car, it went into ICE mode, the catalytic converter lit off quickly with a puddle of gas in it, resulted in an audible detonation. There was a discussion elsewhere on this forum regarding if the fuel injectors are fully off in EV mode.

My wife asked today if that could have been the sound of the subframe welds cracking? lol

The car wouldn't have shuttered - it would have collapsed :>

If it was anything but some fuel buildup the car would not have shuddered. A blown cell in the battery pack would have been sensed pretty quickly.
