Quick Instrument cluster question (dealer test mode)

I own a 2006 Mercury Milan Premier 2.3 auto. I have tried everything to access the dealer test mode via the message center. I follow all the steps (1-press&hold RESET for 5sec, 2-while still holding RESET, turn the key to the "run" position, 3-wait 5sec for TEST to display, 4- release RESET w/in 3sec of TEST being displayed) Whenever I do this, it just says CHECK CHARGING SYSTEM like it always does (in run position) no matter how long I hold RESET for. The park brake is set and the vehicle is in Park during the procedure and, as instructed, the engine is never started. What am I doing wrong?? My friend who has a 2010 Ford Fusion SEL V6 has had success with this procedure and I have not. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
