Hybrid Cooling

Recommended Posts

I was curious about the cooling systems and looked it up in the manual. The ICE is cooled by a pretty standard setup and the pump is belt driven. It is the only thing driven by the belt. The entire engine high-voltage system is cooled via a completely separate coolant path that uses an always-on electric pump. It cools MG1, MG2 and the voltage converter/controller.

Thank you ! - Also FWIW the other day I pulled into my garage (EV mode, a/c off ((80 degrees out))) window down, radio & fan set low (((in other words I could hear real well))) the radiator cooling fan was *on* (no overheating) ((((but ICE off (ICE) cooling fan on ?)))) anyone else noticed this (((((could be a regular occurrence))))) ?

Most modern cars will run the radiator fan based on a sensor in the coolant path. As long as the ignition is on the fan will run if the coolant temp is hot. Some cars will run the fan even with the ignition off, thus the dire warnings when you open the hood. Just because water is not flowing does not mean the fan should not run, cooling what is in the radiator will still have an effect.

What I need to look at is if the hot water to the cabin heat exchanger has an electric pump, or does the exchanger need the ICE to be running to get hot water.
