Area around inside rearview mirror

What is the purpose of the plastic with dots on the inside of the windshield around the rear view mirror? TIA

When you bring down the visors they do not cover that area. They are desinged to assist the visors with that center section.

Car manufacturers use the black dots and/or the solid black mask to hide the ugliness behind the glass. On older cars a lot of the edges of windows were hidden by moldings/chrome. Most newer cars don't have any. The statement about the sun visors is also correct.

i'm pretty sure the "Dot Matrix" is to keep the sunlight out of your eyes at an extreme.
