Brake system Warning

Recommended Posts

Brake system warning light associated with loss of the power brake boost system-brakes still worked just harder to operate.

This has happened twice on my 2010 fusion hybrid in the past 2 weeks. Currently have 2500miles, I too have also experienced the check engine light related to the egr fault as well.

Back to the brake system, when driving in stop and go traffic I heard a warning chime and saw the check brake system warning indicator. When I applied the brakes it was apparent that the power boost assist has shut off. Pulling off to the side of the road and cycling the key switch turned the warning off and restored normal brake operation. I just hope this does not occur when the brakes are really needed.

The dealer reset the codes, the check engine light went off by itself after 3 driving cycles as the manual indicated for a temporary fault. The dealer said the engineers are working on a solution. The brake system checks ok but they reported the event to ford engineering. The down side to having a car with modern tech. is that the dealers seem to be playing catch up with technician skill sets. In particular the hybrid vehicles.

Other than that the fuel economy is great.

Oh, that's not good! I hope Ford is dilligent and open regarding any compromise to the braking system. (My 1st vehicle was the infamous exploding Pinto - Ford really dropped the ball.)

If this is your issue, this is the TSB below. Not really a safety issue from

what I can tell.

PM me and I'll see if I can get you the TSB.

This car is all about the S/W. Being a software engineer myself, I either have must

have been brilliant or an idiot to buy it....

I had the same problem the day after I drove mine off the lot in June. (Scared me half to death) They had my car two weeks. Turned out to be a faulty connector at the brake pedal assembly. They could wiggle the connector and force the error. They overnighted a replacement from Hermosillo and I haven't had any problems since.

Well it gets better, I had the check brake system light come on with the same symptoms just befor reaching my destination in the morning and also this after noon. This evening I had the brake system warning and the "throttle control/ powertrain malfunction" indicator as well. In all cases a key cycle restores normal operation.

My local dealer said to bring it in when the faults are active. Hopefully tomorrow they will come on during my ride home past the dealer.

I hope your kidding about the "bring it in when the faults are active" - if the check engine light comes on (even if a power cycle clears it) a code has been set, what is it ?

I haven't had the check engine light since they cleared it in saturday but I hace had several occurences of brake system malfunction and just last night one event of the little yellow qrench. According to the manual it is "throttle control/ powertrain malfunction. Seems to be temp/time related and only occurs after about 15 miles of mixed continious driving.

Just an update.

I had the Brake system malfunction warning appear on the way home Sept 18. I drove straight to the dealer and left the key on as instructed. Received a loaner (ford focus) and was called on Monday and informed they have a call into Ford engineers. Later in the week I was informed that they are waiting on a improved connector for the brake booster assembly. Repairs were compleated and my Fusion returned to me on October 2. Only had 1 day of driving but all seems well will find out in the next couple of days if the fix is permanent.

The repair notes read that they (Ford Engineers) wanted the brake booster and connector sent back un disturbed. This required the wires into the connector to be clipped and the entire booster replaced and a new connector installed. It seems they have had a couple of other occurences of this as well.

Other than the long wait for a repair I still like the Fusion, back to 40+ MPG :)

Yep, that's the same that happened to mine. I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes a recall at some point.
