Ford Extended Warranties

Recommended Posts

When my wife bought her Honda Mini Van by researching the Honda forums we found a dealer in N.Y. (we live in Mi.) that did extended warranties over the phone for many hundreds of dollars less than the retail price of them. He knew that a quick 10 min. call neted in some money without any work. Has anyone come across a Ford dealer who is willing to do the same thing? Maybe we could use this thread to list the type of FORD warranty you bought and what it cost you. At least this way we could all have some bargaining when we go to buy our own. No off brand warranties please as they just don't get it in most cases.

Yes, my local dealer offered me the price of $1,581 but I bought it online instead from a dealer in Rhode Island for $845 (4yr/100k), http://www.myfordwarranty.com and when I ordered I got my docs in the mail a week later and that was all there was to it.

I bought a 6 year, 100000 miles with $100 deductible for $970 here:

http://buy-ford-warranty.com/default.aspx

That was the best I could find. There might be a better price out there but this was about 60% of what the dealer wanted for the same warranty.

Got it at the same place...smr2112 referred me to them. 7yr/100k for $1205 ($50 deductible). Some say it's a waste of money, I don't mind it because it's transferrable and adds value if I want to sell the car later (maybe for a newer Fusion). There is a surcharge if you wait 1 or 2 years into your standard warranty.

Dealer offered me the same plan for $2450. What a scam!

I vouch for these guys too. I got my warranty from them - cheapest price, no hassles, in the

computer. Ask them for an Oasis printout to confirm. I ordered online, but you can call

and talk with Jeremy Klund who handles it. They must do a ton of them and screw over

other dealerships who live to overcharge.

I don't see coverage for the hybrid parts, electric motors, regenerative braking parts? Did I miss them?

Hybrid unique components are covered 10years/150k in California. I think others states are 8 years/100k if I remember right? For any case, extended warranties do not extend them.

I checked out the warranty posted above and wondered what they met by the added expense of drop off first day rental of $60 or include Enhanced Rental Option* for $90

*Provides up to $75/day rental allowance for a maximum of 10 days

Does this mean that when you bring car in for warranty that a rental car isn't part of the extended warranty like G.M. is?

What it means is...under the standard warranty:

You don't get a rental car until the car has been there overnight (2nd day) - unless you pay for

that first day rental option - the day you drop off the car. A major convience (or inconvience)

issue if you think about it. Worth it to me. Because that $60 will

pay for itself on one repair. Anything at all under warranty - drop it off - take their rental

and get back your car when it's fixed!

So yes, the rental is part of the standard warranty but based on the terms I just described. Which

is why I wanted my ESP warranty active ASAP. So I get that rental even though the item

would be a standard warranty item. 1 week after I had the car, I took it back for a minor

thing, I'm entitled to a rental immediately. Service guy did tell me that they would always

try and accommodate with rentals when car is dropped off, but the option on the rental

entitles you to it without question.

You pay for it, but that puts you on part with alot of higher end cars that do that same

thing for you.

Thinking about the surcharge...I guess I can say that the warranty value appreciates after one year and more after two years, since I believe Ford charges $100 extra per year prior to expiration of 3/36. Investment? :) I primarily got it because of the electronics and sensors that would be expensive to fix. Not worried at all about the transmission.

$1205 would pay for quite a few electronics repairs.

It's not my opinion. Extended warranties do not pay for themselves on average/long term. If they did then the warranty companies would be out of business. You can come out ahead on one or two vehicles but that's like saying I won at blackjack twice so I'll play every time. Eventually the law of averages will catch up to you.

If you like the peace of mind or you're willing to take a gamble on a particular vehicle and don't mind paying for it then fine. Just understand the odds.

I have been wrestling with this issue also. I normally don't keep vehicles past the base warranty so I don't even look at the ESP's. However I might keep the FFH since we do love it.

I do know that some of the components unique to our vehicles are very expensive and not covered by the 8 year "Hybrid Warranty". Consider that on top of the Nav, rear camera and radar, etc. and you have one good reason for ESP.

Secondarily, deaerlships can not do after warranty adjustments on vehicles that were purchased on A/Z/D Plan. 36001 miles and your own. (Except Hybrid components).

If I decide to purchase an ESP, I need to do it before I have 12,000 miles or 1 year in service to avoid the $100 surcharge.

akirby is correct, the odds are in the dealer's favor - over time. I will have to decide if the FFH looks like a long term keeper. If so, I think I will buy a high deductable plan just to give some protection against a hugh bill for a very expensive potential part failure. I will take my best on-line quote to my dealership and ask them to match it.

If I was going to gamble then it would be a high deductible and/or powertrain only plan. If you can afford $1500 out of pocket to pay for the plan then you can afford to pay for anything short of a new engine/tranny.

Not sure about you, but I'm not willing to gamble on the cost of replacing SYNC/Nav (screen, electronics, etc) 3-4+ years

down the road. Replace the hard drive in there, sensors, etc...hello? Do you own a computer, did any part on it ever

die? That will be thousands if they have to yank it out of there and replace for days. Keep it for a week, give me a rental

and I'll take it back when it's fixed. That's the type of thing we're all afraid of. Too much going on in this car to take

a risk that big. ESP with PremiumCare is a bargain once you get the great price from the non-original dealer. Peace of

mind and convience. $2000-$3000 - not a bargain.

I just bought a brand new computer for $450. Parts are even cheaper.

I have saved well over $7000 on my last 5 vehicles by not buying an extended warranty. I'm more than happy to pay $3000 for a repair - I'm still $4000 ahead.

That's the type of thing we're all afraid of.

Speak for yourself.

I understand the risks of buying exteded warranties and don't necessarily agree that they are gambles. I don't think any of us need a lecture on this. I didn't buy it with my 1996 4Runner (186k miles) and won on that "gamble." This car is different. An issue with my backup camera or one of the LCD dash displays (annoying dead pixels, etc) or NAV or BLIS/cross traffic sensors would cost hundreds of dollars to repair. I never bought extended warranties on home electronics but this one is on wheels where vibrations can shorten their lifespan.

Don't get me wrong, it's not just the electronics I want to protect. The peace of mind I get with bumper-to-bumper protection is well worth it to me. I'd like to get every little thing taken care of to keep my resale value up. If I keep the car past 3 years, I'm guessing for the 4-year/64000 mile extension I will be needing to fix something pricey on the car. The bottom line is the price you pay for this ESP. Remember the value of this ESP goes up after year 1 and year 2 (keep in mind mileage limits also). After year 3/36k it starts to depreciate. Maybe FFH will be vastly improved and I will upgrade before my ESP expires.

You've made your point clear. Let people decide if they agree and let's move on.

Nope, but I kept them all at least 2 years past the warranty period.

Let's see - I bet $1200 on a football game. If I lose I'm out $1200. If I win then I'm up $1200.

I pay $1200 for an extended warranty. If I never need it I'm out $1200. If I have to replace an engine I've saved $4000.

How is that not a (calculated) gamble?

Why carry full coverage on your new car? Is it not also a calculated gamble? P.L & PD should do the trick. Personally I would rather have it than not. My Moms Caddys powerseat died on a 6 year old car. The new module was just short of 700 plus labor which ruined a Thousand bucks when over with. She said that was just about what she paid for the warranty when it was new plus there were other things too. I can afford to pay for any repair but choose not to. I know lots of people who take the money for the extended warranty and put it into a CD and if they don't need it they are way ahead but if they do at least it has drawn interest for at least 3 years of 36,000 miles. Of course that was back when a CD was worth something. Next time you are in your dealer see what he charges per hour in labor. I bet its well over $100 per hour. Labor alone could eat up what the warranty costs.

Simple. I can afford to pay for a car repair out of pocket. I can't afford to replace an entire vehicle if it gets totalled. I also can't afford to pay for an expensive medical procedure, replace my house, etc. so for those I have insurance.

Like I said in the beginning - if it gives you peace of mind or just makes you feel better then by all means, buy one. Or if you feel like gambling on a specific vehicle - you might come out ahead. Just don't expect to save money in the long run.
