2010 Black Leather = Chemical burns?

First, does anyone else have a new 2010 Fusion with the black leather? I absolutely love the car but shortly after I got the car my lower to mid back, forearms, and back on my arms have been burning intensely. I'm a healthy 25 year old guy, but now I've got some blotchyness on my lower back where sweat would be mixing with that new car smell. This isn't a muscular issue, but right on the skin. My wife gently slides her hand down my back or along my arm and it hurts, bad.

I'm considering giving the car to my wife for a few weeks to see if she gets the problem too and if mine will go away. Other idea is to drive around in my underwear and see if my hamstrings start to burn. I've already ordered seat covers for the car but they will take a while to make and ship.

 

Does anyone else have a 2010 with black leather? Have you experienced any problems with dermatitis where the leather touches you?

Hi Nick,

i have the black leather in my 2010 FFH also, but nothing like that is happening to me or my wife. We carpool to work in it everyday for a hour each way. And neither of us are having a problem. She usually is more sensitive to things like that than I am too. If you really suspect it is something in the leather, go see your doctor. Especially if it is painful. If it does turn out to be something in the batch of leather you have in your car you will want that documented medically. Seat covers are a good work around, but getting a rash from your new car just isn't right.

My hybrid with black leather is fine. It seems to have been cleaned with a leather dressing. There is an odor and light residue. I doubt that my dealer did it. The car was not cleaned well. I would try cleanig with a quality leather cleaner/conditioner. I doubt if it is the leather because it is sealed.

If whatever chemical they use to treat the leather is going right thru your clothes and giving you a rash, it must be some highly toxic, very strong stuff. Hard to imagine it not causing other people problems. The way things are mass-produced, it would have to be on more than one car too. My medical opinion (FWIW!)... something else is bothering you.

I would try a good leather cleaner - but go to the doctor, too. Could be totally unrelated. I know when I had poison ivy in my system the rash appeared in sweaty areas.

I would go to the dealership and ask what they put on the seats - to protect the leather or just to clean it. That is the most likely place for the leather to pick up wierd chemicals. :banghead: :banghead:

This might not have anything to do with the seats per se. As suggested by Grey when the car was preped they might have used something on the seats, and that may be what you're interacting with. One more reason why I have never allowed a dealer to prep our car (inside or out). Many leather cleaners contain harsh chemicals. The only two things that I'll let on my leather seats is Zaino 9 (cleaner) and Zaino 10 (treatment/conditioner). They also contain lanolin (which is good for your skin) and a sunscreen to protect your seats from fading. If your issue doesn't go away in a few days I'd contact a doctor.

I just bought a '10 Fusion with black leather and drove it for over 4 hours straight. No rash. Sounds to me like the dealer did something. It can probably be undone.

Nick gave us one post and has not been back.

 

I suspect he found out what was on his leather seats and had it removed - no problem.

 

I recall a situation when a technician got a rash on his hands and presumed it was from the Ford Hand Cleaner he had used to clean up with. The Chemical engineer at Ford said "No Way- everything has been tested and checked ten ways to Sunday". Turned out that he had done a brake job and was allergic to brake dust.

 

I'll bet money that whatever chemical was on the leather seat was not a Ford product. :finger:
