now they want to do driver side airbag...

Recommended Posts

incredibly dumb Ford just sent us a recall for the DRIVER SIDE airbag, seems when they told me NOT to drive this back in 2018 for 7 months, the PASSENGER SIDE airbag was such a danger that they rented a loaner for those seven months so that I didn't drive it (since it was so dangerous).  Now?  Guess it's not dangerous, the recall said the new airbag will be in by the third quarter of 2021 but i could continue to drive it until the parts arrives.....really?

It's all about managing risk.  The passenger side airbag was much more dangerous than the driver's side airbag.  Now I guess they figure the issue with the driver's airbag is far less risky, but still worth replacing.  It is possible that one is much more dangerous than the other, even if the root of the issue is the same.

I guess i'll just have to manage my inconvenience since it must have been inconvenient for Ford three years ago to do both at the same time.  And there is no reasonable explanation as to why this air bag that has the same failure description, word-for-word as the notice in 2018 minus the warning NOT TO DRIVE IT UNTIL REPAIRED...it does say that the airbag could send dangerous fragments into the passenger compartment causing the risk of injury OR DEATH.  So Ford cheaps out by not providing a loaner, and it'll be driven hopefully without deploying the driver side airbag that MIGHT cause serious injury or death.  Got it.

It might be months before Ford can fix the airbags. Drive the car and don't get in to any front end accidents. That's a lot under your control by the way you drive.

You drove it before, didn't you?

Does this also apply on the 2019 hybrid?

i will be sure to tell drivers that run lights and stop signs not to pull in front of my defective car, thanks for the advice...when the last recall for the passenger side bag was sent we were told NOT to drive the car until repaired and Ford ended up renting another vehicle to use for almost 8 months.  sure it is expensive for them to do this, but they did build the car with defective air bags and if they are capable of exploding and sending shrapnel throughout the cabin, it's on them, the manufacturer of the airbags (takada, now out of business) and their insurance carriers.

no, we were told NOT to drive it and they provided an Enterprise rental for almost 8 months.  Not this time, for what would seem to be the exact same issue.  Unless you received a notice from Ford your car is not involved.  I'm prety sure Takada, the manufacturer of the defective airbags went out of business in 2017 or 18 so it has nothing to do with 2019 vehicles.

If you drove your car before just fine with the problem, chances are very small you will experience an issue until the problem is resolved (unless you get into an accident).

I guess it's your call to take the risk or not.

I think the point is the risk of the driver's airbag sending out shrapnel is much, much less than the risk that the passenger airbag would have sent shrapnel.  Ford has obviously decided that the difference in that risk warrants a difference in their recommendation.  Whether or not you trust Ford's risk assessment is another story, but understand there's a LOT more that goes into it than just arbitrarily deciding if you should drive your car or not.
