FFH_Hybrid_2013 Report post Posted October 8, 2019 I have a 2013 FFH SE with 120K miles. I have just encountered the dreaded transmission issue and requires replacing. Looking for opinions from this group, is it worth the $5400. to replace given the age and millage on the car?
billford Report post Posted October 9, 2019 In my opinion, if the car has been good and you still like it, probably worthwhile repairing it. Are you sure the noise is from the transmission and not a tire or wheel bearing noise? Ford has a TSB on the transmission noise. It has to be removed and partly disassembled. If the internal case is worn, it needs a complete transmission. If there is no wear on the case, there is a bearing kit and the transmission can be repaired without replacing everything. You don't know which path to take until its disassembled and inspected. You or a shop can partly drain the fluid, maybe 1/2 a quart into a clear jar. If the fluid is dark and looks metallic, it probably needs a complete transmission replacement. If the fluid is not metallic and still looks red, you may have caught the issue early enough for a repair

After receiving the $5400+ quote from Ford for repairs, have been contemplating ordering a salvage transmission from eBay/scrapyard for a local shop to install. Thanks for mentioning the glass jar test, as it may help me choose which repair is necessary (bearing kit vs transmission swap) without costing an arm and a leg.
