What's the process for a new recall?

Recommended Posts

Ford just issued a safety recall for many Fusion models: https://media.ford.com/content/fordmedia/fna/us/en/news/2018/03/14/ford-motor-company-issues-two-n-a--safety-recalls.html

Should we wait until the dealer notifies us of the recall, or should we be more proactive and contact them? Dealers may not even have the required parts yet.

You wait until you get a letter in the mail from Ford indicating that parts are available and it's time to schedule an appointment at your dealer. The dealer will want to see that letter. In the mean time do not pull up on the steering wheel.

I noticed it online in my Ford Owner Account:

  • Recall Date: MAR 12, 2018
  • Recall Title: STEERING WHEEL ATTACHMENT BOLT REPLACEMENT
  • NHTSA Recall Number: AWAITING#
  • Ford Recall Number: 18S08
  • Recall Description: ON YOUR VEHICLE, THE STEERING WHEEL MAY SEPARATE FROM THE STEERING COLUMN IF THE STEERING WHEEL ATTACHMENT BOLT LOOSENS OVER TIME.
  • Risk to Safety: THIS MAY INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH WHILE DRIVING.
  • Remedy Program: FORD MOTOR COMPANY HAS AUTHORIZED YOUR DEALER TO REPLACE THE STEERING WHEEL ATTACHMENT BOLT FREE OF CHARGE (PARTS AND LABOR).
  • Status: 11 - RECALL INCOMPLETE
  • Manufacturer Notes: TO CHECK FOR NON-SAFETY-RELATED PROGRAMS APPLICABLE TO YOUR VEHICLE, SEE HTTP://WWW.FORD.COM/ OR CALL YOUR FORD DEALER.

I called the dealer and was told that letters would go out at the end of April. So nothing to do until then except hope the steering wheel stays attached.

Call your dealer and get on their priority list. Due to the number of parts Ford needs to make parts are going to be in short supply for a while. My dealer said they are only expecting to see 3-4 bolts per week for a while.

I followed up with couple of dealers in the area, and finally one of them set me up for the service. Got the service completed over the weekend.

My recommendation would be to keep calling the dealers every few days to see if they have the part in stock.
