Non-LRR tires?

Recommended Posts

I've developed a thumping on one my of Pirelli Cinturato P7 tires. It's currently on the right front and it gets worse when I turn either left or right. It looks like the tire center is not wearing evenly. The tires were installed in January '16 @ 50K and I'm now at 96K. I was hoping to get close to 80K out of these tires but not sure I'm going to make it. I drive about 42K miles a year and I expect to replace the tires every 2 years.

I rotate the tires at every oil change, I put nitrogen in the tires and also try to keep them aligned although the winters and the potholes make it a challenge. Having the center wear unevenly is a new experience for me. The tread is getting low but has not hit the wear bars yet.

I had the tire road force balanced and they can't see anything wrong with it but I can definitely feel and hear it. They suggested rotating at a shorter interval but I'd be doing that about every month and a half. While I have free rotation that's not really practical for me.

I'm getting ready to rotate the tires again and will move the offending tire to the back and I'm hoping that will minimize the problem but in case it doesn't I may need to replace my tires sooner than I was planning and I'm wondering if anyone has installed non-LRR tires on their Fusion hybrid and if so, what kind of mileage hit did you take?

That's not the first time I've heard of that issue with Pirelli tires. That's why I avoid and don't recommend them.

I'm not sure what brand my tires are, but I know they are not the 'hybrid' tires, they are standard tires, and I like them for my '13 hybrid

My mileage did not change, but I do notice that because they are harder than a hybrid tire, they ride that way too... harder...

The good trade off is that they corner much better and handle in the rain better.

I replaced the original Michelins with Continental PureContacts which ARE low running resistance tires. I still got about a 10% decrease in mileage (it's been 6K miles since the install and the mileage decrease has been permanent). So I learned the lesson and I will be sticking with Michelin.
