Heater Blower doesnt run when car is below 32 degrees F.

Recommended Posts

First winter with my 2014 Fusion Hybrid. Noticed that my heater blower will not start blowing until car gets up to a certain temperature. I don't know what that temperature is. Problem is that ICE sometimes shuts off before the heater blower starts running. This is bad if trying to defrost car in winter. Car will not defrost or heat up. Only solution I found is to force ICE to run by driving it and this sometimes takes 5 or 6 miles before the heater blower fan will start working. I can often feel warm air at the vents but I cannot get the the blower to run. I tried auto, max defrost and all the manual controls I know to try and force the blower to run when it is cold but haven't been able to to get it to blow until car is fully warmed up. Doesn't seem to be a problem with temperature is above freezing or when the blower fan starts to run.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Thanks for your help.

What happens if you just manually turn the fan speed to high?

Nothing happens. I can't get the blower to run in auto or manual mode until the engine comes up to temperature. I can't tell what that temperature is that the fan finally will turn on. Thanks for the reply!

When it's cold, simply turning the heat on should cause the ICE to run almost continuously until it actually starts producing heat.

I thought the ICE should keep going until the heater blowers came on, but when it is cold, (below 32 +/-) the ICE will start and run but shuts off before the heater blower starts blowing warm air.

I don't think the FFH is supposed to do what you say yours is doing. But then I've never been in below-32 temps. We need to hear from FFH owners in colder climates.

If you can't manually crank up the fan then something is wrong. Manual fan control is manual fan control, it should respond to that control at anytime no matter what. Either your fan is defective and doesn't work when it's cold, or your control system is acting up. First thing I'd try is to check for DTC codes, then try a software update. If that doesn't fix it, then I'd try a new fan motor.

On my 2014 the ICE will certainly run until heat is coming out of the vents.

Thanks Waldo for the reply. Is there someway I can check DTC codes or is that a dealer item? Also, is the software update something the dealer must also do?

Pretty much yes to both, though there are ways to do it through FORScan.
