Fuel Cap

Recommended Posts

So the first time I got gas for my new Fusion, I removed the gas cap and found that the opening for the gas tank was, well, open. That is to say, there is no circular metal flap that gets pushed aside when I insert the gas pump. Is this normal? Every other passenger car I have put gas into has a little spring-loaded circular metal flap that is visible upon unscrewing the gas cap.

Possibly related: that first time I got gas, the pump clicked off, and I usually top it off a click or two to account for the gas foaming up in the tank. Well, I did so and as soon as I started pumping a wee bit more gas in, the :censored: thing overflowed. Ever since I've been a little gun-shy in putting any gas in after it automatically shuts off, but I wonder if maybe that gas pump I used that day was at fault, not the car...?

Wow, that's a good question.

First, no there is no metal flap. And granted in my opinion Ford is a little behind the times on the secured gas door thing. However the fill system is good at warding off the potential siphon thief. I can't remember exactly how it worked technically speaking, but it's not like the system is just open and completely vunerable.

As for the autoshutoff. That is part of the EVAP system. However, the amount of pressure of the fuel nozzle would affect how much "foaming" there was and how much and quickly the air was displaced. As for the splashback, did you manuever the nozzle at all or just left it in and continued clicking? I would not recommend topping off tanks as a regular habit because of the use of plastic tanks. Once they're warped from bulging, they're warped and can cause the fuel pump(or pumps) to leak at their seals with the tank.

yes, both issues are normal for the fusion

the Fusion is also my first car that where the tank can't be topped off (yet for some stupid reason I always try anyways, lol ;))

Thanks for your answers. Good to know that they didn't just forget a part in Hermosillo.

I will immediately cease and desist from topping off (actually I haven't topped off at all since that first time.) I didn't think about the gas tank bulging--I figured it was metal. (I did adjust the nozzle before topping off that time, btw.)

I thought I was just an idiot having this same problem. I've overfilled my tank about 3 times at different gas stations...I will not be "topping off the tank" anymore.
