Sync issues with my ipod video

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, just picked up my new '08 SEL Fusion last week and I definatly love the car. The only problem I'm having is when I try to use my ipod with the usb port. When i first got the car, I was able to play audio through the usb from my ipod for about 30 seconds before I would consistantly get the "usb removed" message. I'm pretty sure all the menus worked, but it would only let me use it for less than a minute. After the usb removed message, I would have to reselect the usb input to get my music playing right where it left off, but only for another 30 seconds everytime.

So then i tried to update my ipod to the latest firmware which is 1.2.3 (not sure which version I had before). Now when i plug it in I can't even get past the indexing. I also tried the master reset for the sync with the same results. I am also using the original usb cord that came with my ipod which syncmyride.com says should be fine. I figure I'll try to ask the dealer because I have to stop by there tomorrow anyways, but I thought I'd post my problem to see if anyone has had a similar situation. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

hmmmm.... poor quality of Ford factory radios + the unreliability of Micro$oft products = nothing but problems... [buy aftermarket :happy feet: ]

regarding your specific issue, is there a way to update the ford system? via USB or another method? they may have a bug fix for it.

Battery is fully charged and there are no current updates for the Sync system (at least not for my car). The only thing that I can think of (aside from not having the exact firmware syncmyride.com says to have) is that I have the option (in itunes) turned on to enable disc use (let the ipod be an external hdd for data). I don’t have anything on it as far as data but maybe that option is making it be recognized as an ipod and a flash/disc drive??? Maybe there is a conflict between the two? That’s the only thing I can think of, and I didn't want to mess with itunes because my computer crashed and my old library is gone. I didn't want to jump to resyncing my ipod to my blank library. It definitely takes a while to scroll thru 5000+ songs to put on the 2000 or so that i want... Hopefully the dealer can help out today; they supposedly have some of the salesmen go to sync classes so they can answer questions. If anyone else has any other suggestions let me know, otherwise I'll post when I figure out what the problem was. Thanks!

Bad cable?

Hey,

I have an Ipod mini and the 08 Fusion. My sync seems to work pretty well with a Belkin USB cable that I bought. The only issue I've had is listening to Podcasts. While I'm listening to the podcast, it stopped playing at 24 minutes and then at 41 minutes.

I'd find somebody else with an Ipod and try theirs in your car. Or ship me your Ipod and I'll give it a try. :hysterical2: Just kidding.

Have you tried your original cable that came with your ipod? When I went to the dealer to drop my car off the other day, they said they called Ford and that Ford has heard of this problem, it’s not all that common, and that they have no idea what is wrong basically. We tried someone at the Dealership's ipod video (with my standard cable), it didn’t work. Then the next day (because I left my car there) they bought a new cable and tried it with a shuffle with it having the same problem. So, ya, kinda sucks but supposedly they (Ford) are working on the problem...ya, right. They didn’t say it was a prob with my car; they seemed to say that the problem was with certain ipods, go figure. They seem to think that someone’s ipod will work with my car, just not mine (or the two others we tried I guess). So I guess I either have to wait for some kind of fix or find someone with an ipod that works with my car and steal it… I’ll post again if I ever figure anything out. Guess I have to go buy a line-in cable for the time being.

I apologize in advance for not being a Fusion owner (I have an 08 Explorer) but this is the first time I saw something about the issue I am having.

I have been experiencing the same thing...I get a "USB Removed" message since the day I bought the truck (2 months ago). I have been using iPod (G5 30GB video iPod) revision 1.2.2 (have not tried with 1.2.3) using the Apple supplied cable. What is interesting is that it does not happen every time. It occurs about 80% of the time anywhere between 10 an 30 seconds after I connect. Every once in a while it is fine. I have tried to connect several different ways with no luck (iPod powered off, already playing, in shuffle mode, locked,...).

I have scoured the web and have found nothing. I have gotten to the point where I don't even bring my iPod with me anymore because this is so frustrating (enjoying the 6 free months of Sirius).

Ya, kinda sucks. I have one of those line in cables laying around the house somewhere but that kinda defeats the purpose of sync. So now my brand new i880 Nextel wont load the phone book (so voice command are worthless) and my ipod doesnt play (once again voice command are worthless). I guess I use sync to say play my damn usb flash drive and to just answer my phone. Whatever, hopefully they will come out with some kind of software upgrade. I'll let you guys know if Ford or the dealer calls me; they are supposed to as soon as they figure anything out (hopefully that isnt a long time). 08Explorer, let me know if you figure anything out. Talk to you later.

Is this the factory ipod kit that was already built in to your car, or did you add this later? I did not get the option from the dealer, but iv decided to go aftermarket and so far from what i have read it sounds like a pretty good decsion. I got my aftermarket adapter from icarkits, ill post back when i get it installed next weekend.

I also have a 2008 SEL with Snyc. My IPOD works fine, i use the usb cable that came with it. Did you make sure that all of your files on your ipod have the artist, album,Title,Genre, etc. filled in?

Found this not sure if they are trying to sell a "special" cable or not but they mention it works with minis?

http://prmac.com/release-id-912.htm

This is the factory stereo that supports ipods and zunes (and some other stuff too).

About the keyspan cable, that is only needed if you have an old ipod or a mini. Those ipods dont transfer the audio through the usb for some reason and they need to be plugged into the cars lin in as well as the usb. That cable has both plugs. I ordered on but then returned it once I read that it was not needed for new ipods. Its a rip off too, like 50 bucks.

CC89, as far as having all my artist info typed in, I'm not sure if I do. That is a good point considering that causes a problem with media on a flash drive missing information. I know i have most the info there (as far as artist and title), I will check into that and get back to you. Thanks for the suggestion.

Got all the genres setup, artist names w/o any symbols or anything crazy, and typed "none" for all my blank albums. Ipod started to play, but in the end still said the wonderful usb removed message.

So I erased my ipod (after i backed it up), took off the use disc space option, and only put like two songs on it (to make sure some song wasn't the problem). Same result. I'm out of ideas...

I've been monitoring several webpages on behalf of Ford and hope you don't mind if I clarify some information. Ford is committed to the success of SYNC and we are constantly updating our compatibility lists of cell phones and media devices. We've devoted a lot of resources to work out any issues. Although most phones and media sources have no compatibility issues, we are aware that some issues are not yet resolved. The cell phone issues usually arise due to peculiarities in the different types of phones and their applications of Bluetooth specifications.

With that said, I recommend that you visit and register at www.syncmyride.com to get the latest information. If you're not finding what you need to make your SYNC experience what you expect, then please contact the SYNC support team by following the "contact us" link at syncmyride.com. Be ready to provide the firmware version of your device, if you know it. If you report the specifics of your issue and they cannot solve your problem right away, they will contact you back when the solution is available. We appreciate that you chose Ford for your new vehicle purchase.

First of all, that is a canned message, second is that I already have an account there and Ford knows of the problem, mine specifically, they already have my vin # and phone numbers, so they should call or contact me somehow when there is a solution. This topic was created to try to figure out the problem (thinking it was possibly with my ipod), with me in the end having no success. Please get this issue fixed so that I can enjoy my Sync for longer than 40 seconds at a time. Also make it load the phone book from my Nextel i880 so I can use voice commands! Maybe that last one is a stretch, but it would be nice...

I am the General Sales Manager of a Ford Lincoln Mercury Dealership and I recently leased a new MKX for my Wife and a Fusion for my Son. My Wife's I-pod works fine with the Sync USB connection in both vehicles. My Son has a Zune and it has the same problem in both vehicles (it works fine for about 30 seconds and then the USB disconnected error message appears.) We purchased a new cable and did a firmware update. I'm both frustrated and embarrased.

Thats interesting that you have this problem with the zune, I figured that any Microsoft product would have worked for sure. I should try my buddies zune to see if that works in my car. I'm currently making due with the line in...

Have you reported your ZUNE/SYNC issue to the SYNC support team or registered at syncmyride.com? I did a quick check and I didn't notice any unresolved ZUNE issues. Also, as a dealership representative you may want to report this to your SYNC specialist. He/she would have access to all the SYNC support people and materials.

I am having the exact same issue with my IPOD classic 160GB. It plays for anywhere from 17 to 30 seconds and then issues a "usb removed" error. The connection resets, but then intermittently disconnects/reconnects.

After a lot of tinkering I found out why the sync is doing this. Most people do not have thier portable devices completely full. However If you are like me always looking for more space and everything is maxed out you will have problems with the sync. Point being the sync requires space on the ipod to index. I left 1.5G free and after sync was done I had 1 G free. It took about 20 minutes for the 55 G of music on my IPOD Video to finish the indexing but as long as I do not hook it up to my computer it wont have to reindex. I say this because every time the ipod is connected to itunes it wipes out the ford sync information requiring a reindex. So free a little space and you should be good to go.

leave the use disc space option on. otherwise the sync can not write to the drive for indexing. Also if you have compilations, be sure that your ipod is set to off otherwise you will not be able to see or play and of the compilations albums, this is a bug I would really like to see fixed.
