robertlane Report post Posted December 11, 2015 Ford teases Fusion hybrid; expands EV research globally Ford teased media with the next-generation Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid under wraps until next month's 2016 North American International Auto Show. The car was hidden under a tarp at an event in Dearborn to announce that Ford is expanding battery research and development for electric vehicles with facilities in Europe and Asia. Expanding the work globally enables Ford to better use the work being done in Michigan at Ford's Dearborn campus as well as through a partnership at the University of Michigan. In May, Executive Chairman Bill Ford announced plans to hire 200 engineers this year to work on electrification programs in the new lab the automaker built in Dearborn.Ford has added 120 engineers so far, the company said today. Ted Miller, senior manager of energy storage and research, said the lab sees a lot of improvements possible for lithium ion batteries over the next decade in both efficiency and cost.
