Woohoo! MN is #47, almost the best...

 

Sometimes though, the MN Nice mentality of letting ppl in is bad because it actually contributes to traffic jams. It's not uncommon to see drivers on the freeway brake heavily when they see mergers coming down an entrance ramp. This behavior causes traffic jams on the freeway.

I've driven in just about every state over the years and I expect things have changed over time. Some random thoughts:

 

• I grew up in the Washington DC area. Last drove there in the late 70's. While traffic is bad, I never considered the drivers to be bad.
• I won't drive in Boston. I even feel I'm risking my life riding in a cab there.
• It makes no sense to drive in NYC, but upstate NY is fine.
• Don't use your turn signals in Los Angeles if you intend to change lanes. I actually don't mind driving there, but many years ago I was visiting friends on the opposite side of the basin from Disneyland. I drove to Disneyland one day (during rush hour, of course) and thought it was the most exciting ride of the day.
• They are right about the mellowness in the Pacific Northwest. Very little driving in Idaho so don't know why it's rated so bad.

I would have thought Nevada would have been closer to #1 than being #9. We have some really rude, terrible drivers here. The funny thing is, most everyone here in the Vegas area (the largest population in the state) is from somewhere else. Somehow, they have created their own driving style and reputation for it which, honestly, is well deserved!

I don't think they take the difference between rude and stupid drivers into consideration when trying to put this together. It's just a click bait item anyway.

Not to be too technical, but D.C. isn't a state. Get it together Weather Channel ?

I'm not sure they can really give a good impression of a state as a whole. Take my home state of Michigan. The drivers in my hometown are vastly different than the drivers in Detroit, which are vastly different than the drivers in the U.P., which are vastly different than the drivers in Lansing. If you drive in one of the those locations Michigan would have the nicest most polite drivers anywhere. If you drive in another, Michigan would have the rudest most stupid drivers anywhere.

 

And this isn't just a 'Michigan' thing. I've noticed it in Ohio (Cleveland/Cincinnati areas vs rural Ohio), Indiana (don't get me started on Indianapolis!), Illinois, Mnnesota, Cali, NY, Mass, Florida... every state. I think if you want to make both a good and honest comparative list you could compare major metropolitan areas, but not States as a whole.

Always was a problem for me. When asked what state I was born in, I'd say "none" because I was born in D.C. But then, technically, there are four states that are not "states" but commonwealths: Kentucky, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. Since I grew up in Virginia, I was even more confused. :)

In Canada I have driven in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, and Quebec. BC is the most likely to have dumb drivers i.e. idiots who take their time responding to lights or who don't understand how the rain affects handling (let alone snow), but it gets much better outside the Vancouver city limits. Quebec is the most likely to have impolite drivers, i.e. they don't let you in when you signal for a lane change, and love tailgating. Ontario particularly Ottawa is actually where I found Canadian drivers at their best, in all kinds of weather conditions (sole exception is taxi drivers, many are utter savages). I wonder if those high auto insurance premiums actually influence driving habits...

 

In USA I have driven in Washington, California (just the Bay Area), Nevada, upstate New York (nowhere near NYC, just the area around Buffalo), Massachusetts, and Florida. Florida hands down has the absolute worst drivers of those states, followed by Massachusetts, although in MA's case it's mostly limited to downtown Boston/Cambridge and the s**tty quality of the roads there (a forking mess) makes that behavior understandable at times (if you don't pull a fast lane change you might spend half an hour rerouting because of forks). In Florida the roads are nice, wide, and laid out in proper grids yet obnoxious habits reign supreme for some reason, from Cape Canaveral to Miami. In all the other states I felt they were no better or worse than in Ontario though if I ever do drive in Los Angeles or NYC that perception might change. I visit Washington a lot and driving there is certainly more pleasant than it is in BC

Miami has some of the rudest drivers I've ever seen. When my wife & I visited friends there in 2014, we couldn't believe how many car accidents they have on sunny days with dry roads.

In Miami I used my horn more times in one day than I do in a whole year back home :P Makes me wonder if that 24/7 heat is melting brains heh.

Can't remember the last time I honked at someone. Another reason to live in fly over country.
