Hi guys,

 

I know there's a few of you who bought a extended warranty from internet backed by Ford for a cheaper than dealer price (Flood ESP I think). That's for the US market.

I wonder if some here bought one from fordesp.ca?

I've been checking the website for over a month but can't get a quote due to site maintenance.

However I did ask my local dealer in Vancouver for a quote and they said it's around $2400 + GST for a 4-year/100,000 km premiumcare warranty that covers everything. He was willing to give me a discount to around $2200+GST, and I'd also avoid paying any deductible for repairs conducted at this particular dealer.

 

I've made an appointment next Friday to purchase the warranty when I do servicing. My factory warranty expires this August (mine is a Job 1 car originally registered in August 2012).

 

I've heard that it is possible to buy a warranty stateside but dealers may not be willing to sell it if they know you don't live in the country.

4 yr/100km means you're only getting 1 additional year beyond the 3/36mi bumper-to-bumper warranty. That sounds like an awful lot of money for 12 additional months of warranty...

 

Most dealers at least double the price of the warranty. I'd tell them that you want at least 40% off their standard price or you'll walk. At the marked up charges you may end up better off taking the money you would've spent on the warranty & investing it. Then you can use that money to pay for repairs as they come up, essentially self-insuring against future repair costs versus buying an insurance policy (the extended warranty).

For your warranty, I'd ask a quote for a 6 or 7 year. You're only getting an extra year.

And btw, the mark up profit over a warranty is normally around a 1000$, 200$ ain't a big deal. Make him work harder :)

Wait I thought it means my warranty lasts a total of 7 years, or 118,000 km total, whichever comes first? Crap, gotta check...

 

edit: I've emailed my dealer to confirm, but I did read the original email that quoted me the 2 grand and it did strongly imply that I'm extending my warranty by an additional four years, not adding one extra year.

 

2k is daylight robbery to extend for one year - I bet an individual out of warranty repair would cost far less.

 

After all, in the email they asked me how many total years I wanted to keep my car for past the factory warranty, and I said at least 3 years, so they offered me a 4 year warranty. It doesn't make sense for them to offer merely a one-year extension when I specifically asked for something that lasts at least 3 years. To me, 2 grand is a tolerable sum for a total of four years - I spend about that much on insurance every year anyway (Canada is horrible to those of us < 25 years old). It better be the case or I'm cancelling the deal!

 

edit again: I'm posting the contents of the original email. Perhaps the sales guy was actually offering me a 7 year warranty after all?

 

If you were to use ESP PremiumCare through Ford to extend it for another 4 years (from now) or up to 100,000kms total, you’d be looking at $2610 plus GST which would also have a $100 deductible if needed to be used.

 

We do offer another warranty through Tricare which would give you the exact same coverages (4 years from now or up to 100,000kms total) as FORD’s ESP PremiumCare and would have a $0 deductible if brought in to Richport Ford for repairs if anything were to happen and need to be used ($100 deductible if repaired at another Forddealership). The price of this policy is $2245 plus GST which would save you $365.

We do offer another warranty through Tricare which would give you the exact same coverages (4 years from now or up to 100,000kms total) as FORD’s ESP PremiumCare and would have a $0 deductible if brought in to Richport Ford for repairs if anything were to happen and need to be used ($100 deductible if repaired at another Forddealership)...

 

This is an example of the "disappearing deductible" we had discussed previously, where there is no deductible at your "home" dealership, but there is a deductible at all other dealerships.

I just realized Tricare != ESP. Crap! This Friday I'm gonna negotiate as best as I can at my local dealer to haggle the ESP price down to at least the same price as Tricare.

 

Especially with two recalls on the way that won't be fixable until after my factory warranty has expired...

 

EDIT: Did some digging. "Tricare" didn't produce many results in google because it's actually a product of a larger company called Tricor.

 

Just read a few horror stories of Tricor denying warranty coverage on repairs of electrical failures.

 

Definitely not buying this warranty. Need to haggle for the ESP!

14S21 - RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE REPLACEMENT
15S16 - DOOR LATCH REPLACEMENT

If you read the recall notices posted online you'll see that there is no charge for recall repairs. TSB repairs are not free after the warranty expires.

I inquired on fd-warranty.com and learned that I can take advantage of a friend's or relative's US address to get a ESP Premiumcare for around $1400 USD. At the current exchange rate that's still a better deal.

 

If I can negotiate the actual ESP (not the TriCare) warranty down to $2000 CAD or less I'll buy it.

Don't forget to factor in the GST savings if you buy in the US. Unfortunately for you the US Dollar is strong now which makes things more expensive for Canadians.

Negotiated to $2,000 all in, GST included (5%). This is the actual Ford ESP and not a third party, and is valid in all states and provinces/territories. Not too bad a deal.
