Ford, DowAksa to Jointly Develop Carbon Fiber for High-Volume Automotive Light-weighting Applications

Ford and DowAksa today signed a joint development agreement (JDA) to formally advance research on cost-effective, high-volume manufacturing of automotive-grade carbon fiber, a material poised to play a significant role in the drive to make vehicles lighter for greater fuel efficiency, performance and capability.

I went to the NY Auto Show last week and checked out the combined EPA on the F150 and Chevy Silverado.

Tried to compare as close as possible trucks. Both V6 & 4WD. Chevy had a better transmission.

Best I could compare Ford got 16 mpg and Chevy got 15 total avg combined.

 

Now that didn't seem like much diff. And its not a perfect comparison.

But it is a 6.67% improvement.

Shows how hard it is to make significant gas reductions through just weight reduction.

 

Highway driving may be bigger difference. And that could be significant over the life of the trucks.
