What would you think of a convertible FFH?

Recommended Posts

With all the beautiful weather we've been having here in Vegas recently, it made me wish I had the moonroof like my 2012 (gas) Fusion. The weather's been so nice we even set a new temperature record a few days ago! Anyway, the more I thought about it, the more I thought how cool it would be if you could buy a convertible FFH. I know a lot of you wouldn't care because you don't get enough "convertible weather" to justify buying one, but for those of you who live in fair weather states, what would you think? Would you consider buying one? I know where I live, I could put the top down for about 6 months of the year. How about you?

Convertibles are nice (at times) but I hate the fact that you then only have a four passenger car.

If I were interested in a convertible, and I have had several in the past, I would just go with the Mustang. (I had a '68 Shelby GT 500 convertible until gas doubled in price to $1.00 a gallon, lol.)

I will also consider a convertible much preferable to a moonroof. I hated that the moonroof cuts down on headroom and that the side panels obstruct the view to the right and left, such as when driving through canyons. The moonroofs in my previous MKS's was bad enough, but in the MKZ, my head was solidly against the headliner when I tried one at the dealer. I am quite happy with my solid roof.

My convertibles were Mustangs and Corvettes, a wonderful experience.

Don't think I'd be too enthusiastic about a FFH 'vert.

I don't buy Moonroofs/Sunroofs because eventually they leak water or some other opening/closing issue happens.

The Ford Service workbook has a large section dedicated to the Roof Opening Panel and all the things that can go wrong.

Every car I've owned since 1990 has had a moonroof, and I've never experienced a problem. I like them!

I think of it this way... would having a convertible with the drive train from a FFH be nice? Yes. But then again I think that every car should have a hybrid option... the Taurus, Focus, Fiesta, Mustang, Escape, Edge, Explorer, Flex, Expedition, F150...) Would a FFH look good in a convertible... no. Design wise, I think the FFH's large rear window (it looks almost like a hatchback) would have to be compromised for a convertible system to work.

Consider when they made the convertible version of the PT cruiser... it just looked wrong. I'm sure it was nice to drive around with the top down but they probably would have been better off developing a car that looked good as a drop top.

I personally don't like convertibles. There is such a slim temperature/humidity range where I want open air that they are never worth it. A week or so in spring, a week or so in autumn.... then the roof stays up.

On the moonroof side, I'd just rather go without. Mine has one only because the car had it. I'd never have added it if I was doing a build to order car. It does eat into the head room a bit, but at 6 foot 3, I don't graze the headline while driving.

I agree. They can also be a maintenance issue. My daughter just had a nasty repair bill for her moon roof (2010 Ford Focus) that starting leaking.

I'm also 6'3", but most of my height is above my waist. That's the cause of my problems with a moonroof.

Because of my body structure, I can't even sit in the back seat of my MKZ-h. (I also have a problem in that my neck is very stiff and I can't bend it forward or to the sides, thus my appreciation for all of the driver assists the car has.)

I would buy a 2 door, ruby red with black top and tan interior FFH Convertible in a heart beat.

If it looked as good as the 2015 mustang, I'd definitely want to rent one. Own one... probably not (I need the passenger and trunk space).

As for moonroofs, I detest them and think they are the most useless option in existence. The only reason my car has one is because I didn't do a factory order. I can appreciate a full sunroof on convertibles, but a moonroof in a sedan... come on it's another vulnerable point (especially for leaks), it adds weight (NOT good on a hybrid car!), and it reduces headroom (I'm not that tall but I understand that lots of people are). Yes, I know lots of people like moonroofs, but lots don't (like me) and manufacturers are basically shoving them down the customers' throats. My parents' last six cars all had moonroofs because they were standard or mandatory to get options like nav. The ones we traded in were done so without EVER having touched the moonroof once. Seriously.

But just to play along, since the FFH will never be made with 2 doors... what would you guys think of a landaulet version of the sedan? If I were some royal, I'd love to be chauffeured in a landaulet FFH so I can wave to my fans (or get sniped by a madman) in style!

Also, this mockup isn't a convertible, but it still looks nice:
