Yesterday I learn't something interesting in regards to cruzing on the Highway. Looks like even at 65-70 MPH on a flat road the ICE is capable of low 40's MPG. The problem comes about when the ICE is running these speeds and charging the battery. For thoes of you running on the highway, try getting the battery charged up and then trying to keep above the 63 MPH (Battery) threshold. My guess is you will get much better millage. As for city driving I have found it is better to use the batter to cruze rather than accelerate, so I accelerate moderatly with the ice up to speed then back off a bit and cruze on the battery. Finally as I said before temperatue makes a difference. At about 50 deg and above I have found that not only does the battery last longer but it also charges quicker. So Code_Warrior, you have the advantage for now ;)

I'm not sure about all your stringent criteria but I have logged over 800 miles on Fuelly at an average over 45 MPG. I would say that is not bad for the winter months with a car of just over 1000 Miles. I have no doubt that once the warmer months hit this will be over EPA. Now I am not disputing that there are people here that have legitimate problems with their cars, but I will also say it is possible to get EPA and more in a properly functioning vehicle. I have actually got runs on this car over 60 MPG. Will every properly functioning vehicle get this, No. Because assuming the car is working properly the biggest influence of MPG is the hunk on flesh behind the wheel. I have always got above EPA in every car I have owned and from what I have seen so far in this car, over the year I will for this one too. Just my 2c :)

Fusion Hybrid: Fuel Saving Tips and Tricks
GreenAussie replied to Fusion Hybrid Guide's topic in Hybrid Driving Tips & Tricks
I thought that the Atkinson cycle was just a change in the talve timings (i.e. open for part of the compression cycle). If that's the case then direct valve actuation via a solinoid, could make that programable and you could get the advantages or both. I guess 2 cams would work too. I guess this is too expensive to implement.- 66 replies

I have 810 Miles on my 2013 FFH. Fuelly says 48.4 but the car has a life average of about 44. Still not yet to my 3rd fillup, so will see if this goes down or not then.

Turned in my 2010 C Class in today. Trip up to drop it off 20.5 MPG, trip back (girlfriend) driving the fusion 49.1 MPG. The fusion is bigger and roomer, the interior is about 90% of the MB, the fusion has more technology, seats are much more comfortable, its quieter, costs $10K less and a pretty sure the 40k mile routine service won’t be $1400. Boy I love this car!!! :worship: :happy feet: :victory:

The autonomous car
GreenAussie replied to GreenAussie's topic in Advanced Driver Assistance Technologies
Did you have the lane correct turned on or just the warning of drifting across the lane (There are several settings for this)? I can assure you there is a warning there, but I think you need the correction on and you need to start crossing the lane. -

I like the message it puts up on the display, then you take your hands of the wheel and it corrects. It must be looking for resistance feedback in the wheel when correcting. -
Same here. You dont need 18Inch wheels.

So today was the coldest yet 20 Deg and my milage the lowest 37.7 MPG. So for me on a constant trip, the biggest factor in fuel ecconomy is air temp.

How do you get maximum regenerative braking?
GreenAussie replied to ffhseattle's topic in Batteries & Charging
I can't stress enough to not try to operate the car like it is electric by accelerating from a stop staying in EV mode. Now this is not to say that while in residential areas parking lots things like this that you should not drive from zero in EV I just mean while in traffic and trying to get to a destination. I know I sound like a broken record but doing this uses more energy than can be stored back in a fair amount of time which lessens the amount of time you can take advantage of driving in ALL Electric mode using no gas. So are you saying its better to accelerate at a moderate speed with the ICE and then have more time to cruse on the battery? If, so this is interesting. I might try to change my driving style a bit and see if I can improve my average. Not sure if I agree with your point on the temperature having no effect. For me it is very consistant, such that on my trip knowing the temp I can predict the milage within 2 MPG. Considering I am seeing a difference in the extreems of 15MPG, I have a hard time beliving that this is due to my driving veration alone. -
Not quite sure how to answer that. I am a fuel efficient driver. In my C Class (Rated 25/19) I would get 29/23. I have changed my driving style a bit with the fusion as follows. 1) First, I usually accelerate at a moderate rate (unless crossing traffic, merging etc), by that I mean no more than 2.5 increments out of 5 on the KW meter when gas engine running 2) I turn on the heated seats but leave off the heating until the engine has warmed up. 3) When it switches to EV+ in my development I keep it in electric mode to my house. 4) I have figured out what is the right moderate pressure to get max regen on the brakes. This usually means start breaking a little earlier when coming up to a red light Other than that I have not changed my driving style all that much. One Item I have noticed is that temp has a real effect on efficiency. For me it is very consistent. Take a baseline of about 40 MPG at 30 dec F; for every 10 deg increase I will get 4-5 additional MPG (At least up to 60 deg, that’s the warmest I got). So I would say If I was say in PA, I am sure my average mileage would drop to about 37-39MPG for the same trip. One other think to note is that I do keep my car in a garage and I think if it was out in the colder weather overnight the effect would be a 5 MPG drop on my trip to work in the morning.

Well finally did my second fillup and Fuelly has calculated just above sticker for that last fillup (about 3/4 of a tank). Car still only at about 550 miles, so still breaking in and room for improvement. I'm sure once I do a long highway trip from NC to PA this will drop, but for my regular work commute, I am loving it. :happy feet:
