I was the one with the crack, and everything before and after appeared to be very even. There was nothing such as you describe. In fact, after 17 months of ownership, I am very impressed about the overall quality and attention to details with this car. I have since done a lot of reading about similar sunroof/moonroof cracks across all car lines. Audi, BMW, Kia, Hyundai, etc have all experienced increased occurrences of unexplained incidents. No one expert can point to one exact causal factor. It seems to be related to the more aerodynamic vehicle designs developed over the last 10+ years, combined with subsequent factors of harmonic resonance and stress caused by changes in temperature or from fatigue. Bottom line - it could happen to the best of cars and maybe even the very best ones. While all cars lines, especially new ones, can experience quality control issues, there does not appear to a connection with my particular incident and any weatherstripping or gaskets.

This last tank - 52.6 MPG, 615 mi/tank and still had DTE miles left. Started approaching "jeff_h-type" numbers. :) I sure could get used to those kind of numbers all the time. In fact, I was managing 54+ MPG for the first 500+ miles of the tank, but the outside temps started to get into the 90s and my A/C usage was way up. This car loves 65-80 degrees outside with low humidity, which we had recently. Sadly, though, in this area I expect that the heat and high humidity will stay with us now until late September, so I will be happy if I can continue to achieve high 40's MPG-wise for the summer.

What is anyone using for steering wheel cover?
keybman replied to Ram's topic in Interior Trim, Seats, Seat Belts & Covers
Ram - Rather than a steering wheel cover, have you considered a good pair of driving gloves? For years now, I have been using leather fingerless biker gloves with great success. Having my fingers free gives me flexibility, while the palms and heels of the glove make good contact with the leather-wrapped wheel. And when the interior is summer hot, it creates a good insulation without worrying about grabbing a searing hot wheel. -
Crack in the Moon Roof
keybman replied to keybman's topic in Glass, Headlights, Fog lamps, Lenses & Window Tint
I am told that it was the dealership that took the initiative to resolve this so positively. But, without Ashley taking the time to respond to my general inquiry in this forum, and then following up with the area CSM, this result would not have occurred. In this world, it is often possible in our jobs to just dial it in. So, I am VERY appreciative when individuals, especially those in a customer service position, choose to take a step forward and offer their help. Those kind of people are my heroes. -
Crack in the Moon Roof
keybman replied to keybman's topic in Glass, Headlights, Fog lamps, Lenses & Window Tint
UPDATED UPDATE: I received a call this morning from the dealership (PF), saying that they were going to cover the glass under warranty after all. :drop: They have ordered the glass, it will be in tomorrow, and they will replace it on Thursday. Totally unexpected, and not solicited by me, but I am very grateful. Don't know if this is a result of the Customer Satisfaction program HB referred to, a change of heart, or a reexamination of the case, but I am certainly satisfied. I already love the car. Now I am growing a strong affection for the dealership, Thank you, Planet Ford! :love_shower: And thank you, Forum members for your input - much appreciated. -
Crack in the Moon Roof
keybman replied to keybman's topic in Glass, Headlights, Fog lamps, Lenses & Window Tint
I finally received the answer from Ford this afternoon after numerous attempts to reach the CSM. Even though 3 different technicians found NO impact point, NO origin point or cause for the crack, it was still deemed to be "non-warrantable". Apparently, DESPITE what the service dept techs had said verbally upon inspection, the engineering consensus was that this was due to road hazard. No recourse. No compensation for multiple trips to the dealer at their request. Nada. Nothing. Done deal. And it only took 27 days to tell me this. -
Thanks, Ted. :) And you are right. The "tank range" for my FFH seems to be around ~640 according to the numbers. But, I have not previously achieved 600 mi/tank for the same reason I am not yet ready for an all-electric vehicle -- "range anxiety". When the yellow low fuel warning comes on, I immediately estimate where I might be when it hits the "mythical empty" mark. And on a few occasions where I have pushed it a bit farther down the road and the Red Empty Warning lights up, I find the quickest gas station and sigh a breath of relief. I would not care to go through the problems that I read about with hybrid vehicles running out of gas completely. That's when the "mythical empty" mark becomes a nightmarish reality. There are just too many variables to consider that could significantly increase that risk of happening. This particular tank just happened to indicate a "miles to empty" number which put me at 591 miles for the tank, and since it was close to 600, I went ahead and pushed it past the warning. I suppose that's where I used the word "courage", which could easily have been coined "foolish" if I had run out. Bottom line -- This car has given me a lot of good things (see the "Love It, Hate It" thread in the Off Topic Discussion section http://fordfusionhybridforum.com/topic/5765-love-it-hate-it/page-3 ) and I choose not to create an unnecessary stressor for myself. But it was sure kewl to see! :camera:
-
Finally got the courage to drive past the red gas pump warning and achieve the 600 mile mark this tank!! :happy feet: Temps in the 70s and 80s recently, combined with less rainy commutes, certainly were the key factors in helping this happen. I still love this car.

I agree, HB. I left a message for Ashley to see if there is any additional remedy going forward. -
Crack in the Moon Roof
keybman replied to keybman's topic in Glass, Headlights, Fog lamps, Lenses & Window Tint
UPDATE: The area Ford Service rep contacted me and asked me to drive 25 miles to the local dealer to "take some pictures". I did and they noted that there was no impact point, just the long crack with no point of origin. Then they called the next day and asked me to drive to the dealer again for "more pictures" that the engineering team was requesting. I did, and then got a call the next day asking me to drive to the dealer AGAIN - this time to "open and close" the moon roof to check whether it was missing the track. And then, I got a call from the dealer today telling me basically nothing that we didn't know before - no idea of origin or cause, but that it was not covered under warranty. So, at this point, I am dealing with my insurance company to get it replaced, but sure wish I hadn't had the "Ping-Pong" treatment by Ford for the last week. 3 trips to the dealer at their request, and no results, no helpful information, just extra mileage on my vehicle at my expense, along with a cracked piece of glass over my head all week. Makes me question whether I should have posted anything publically asking about others' shared experiences. <sigh> -

Crack in the Moon Roof
keybman replied to keybman's topic in Glass, Headlights, Fog lamps, Lenses & Window Tint
Since I am either garaged at home or at work, and the weather here in Houston has been colder than usual, but nothing like the rest of the country, my assumption is that weather is not the culprit. You are right, though, as I had not looked up at the moon roof in several weeks. -
I discovered a crack in my moon roof yesterday. It runs across the entire glass, looking a bit like Charlie Brown's shirt. But, before I get this glass replaced, I wanted to run it by the 12,000 members-strong Forum to see if this has been experienced by any other 2013-14 FFH owners. My assumption is that this was probably caused by our lovely Houston roads, happily flowing traffic, courteous drivers and random @^%!#&^$!! (stuff) kicked up by others' tires. But there is no obvious chip or starting point for the crack, so I can't rule out the possibility of a design or quality issue. Thus, I post. Any others?

My flawless mechanical luck ran out
keybman replied to Aquineas's topic in Lounge - Fusion Hybrid Talk
Regarding this forum, I can find the "Like This" button, but I can't find the "Don't Like This" button. If there were one, I would click it for this post. Aquineas, I will miss looking for you along BW-8 & 249. Every time I pass Compaq campus, I look around to see if I can spot the Bordeaux FFH. Can I ask what you chose to replace? -
Just for comparison's sake... For the period that the chart covers, if I eliminate the "break-in" and the "vacation" miles, the MPG is as follows: 48.6 MPG - all commutes combined 49.3 - regular city commute 47.6 - highway commute
-
Here is my chart. To me, I can see the clear delineation between the 1st 1350 miles of break-in/winter blend/learning FFH (Jan-Feb), regular city commute (Mar-Jul), vacation mileage (Aug), and then alternate highway commute (Sep-Dec). Should be interesting to see how the early months of 2014 compare to last year, since I am back to my regular commute. Comparing Jan14 to Jan13, there is a 4-5 MPG increase this year, despite some actual sub-freezing temperature days here in Houston. This also reiterates to me 2 key factors to diminishing MPG - Speed and cold/hot outside temps (1st time to attach a pic...sorry it's small...a left click on the pic will bring it to full size...I'll do better next time)

2014 - FFH - Have you guys seen this bug?
keybman replied to bsondhi's topic in Audio, MyFord, Navigation & SYNC
I have seen that occasionally. But, that same name/entry has shown up correctly in previous calls, and will show up correctly in subsequent calls. I have not found it to be a problem in general. -
I am approaching the 1 year anniversary for my FFH. So, being a numbers person, I have compiled a few stats that I am sharing with the group. . Lifetime MPG - 47.5 MPG on 16326 miles Break-in / Winter Blend / Learning FFH 43.2 MPG 1355 mi Commute 1 (50/50 city/hwy) 49.3 MPG 7770 mi Vacation (75 mph) 40.4 MPG 990 mi Vacation (69 mph) 47.5 MPG 1044 mi Commute 2 (30/70 city/hwy) 47.9 MPG 5166 mi Best tank: 51.0 MPG (Commute 1) Worst tank: 39.7 MPG (Vacation (75 mph)) Most miles driven per tank: 584 mi (filled 11.5 gal) Avg tank range (est): 640 mi (never willing to risk testing it) Savings vs previous vehicle (20 MPG): $1,542 / year I hope everyone has safe and joyous holidays!

My climate control wigged out the other day...
keybman replied to jonessoda's topic in Climate Control
I have had this FFH for almost a year now, and have experienced several what I call "ghost occurrences". The most annoying tends to be the "Climate Control ghost". It has only happened to me 3 or 4 times, but at random, the Climate Control turns itself on, the Heat begins to blast at full throttle - cabin and floor vents - and the Climate Control auto temps are altered. When it is already 95+ degrees in the Houston summer, it is incredibly surprising when it happens. But, similar to "jonessoda", I reset the CC temps and everything appears to be normally operating once again. I tend to agree with hybridbear's software bug "from time to time" theory, since it has not proven to be a consistent problem. (I have never addressed it with the dealer or service dept.) -
Any downside to tinting?
keybman replied to KLH's topic in Glass, Headlights, Fog lamps, Lenses & Window Tint
Very glad that you had a great outcome. I totally agree with your assessment - and I had the same experience. Tinting definitely adds extra good looks and style to the 2013-14 FFH. The headlight reflections on the defroster lines does diminish after initial installation, and in my experience, should not be a reason to forego tinting. Congrats on your enhancement! Looking forward to the pics. -
Any downside to tinting?
keybman replied to KLH's topic in Glass, Headlights, Fog lamps, Lenses & Window Tint
Definitely agree with #3. For me, the reflection off the defogger lines at night was almost like seeing double vision - 2 sets of headlights for each vehicle. But, that should NOT be a tint job deal killer. The benefits of a cooler car in the summer, and adding to the looks of the vehicle at the same time far outweigh this minor annoyance. -
I just had my first 50+ MPG tank since 5/16/13. Not complaining about "only" high 40s MPG, but I am glad the summer is over. The last 10 days of actually having 50 and 60 degree temperatures in the morning, along with lower humidity has done wonders for the gas economy. Here's the formula: NO A/C = more $ in my wallet

Houston <---> Orlando trip results - After PCM update by keybman
keybman replied to keybman's topic in Fuel Mileage
Louisiana is mostly flat, but Mississippi, Alabama and Florida interstate driving is rolling up and down hills constantly. And I got to see how the ACC handled power control on those hills - utilizing the EV on the climb, and using the ICE on the descents. Definitely added a visual education for me, in addition to what I have read as many have described in this forum as ideal hybrid driving on hills -
I Love this car still !!! Drove my first highway trip and have some results to share. On the trip from Houston to Orlando (I-10, I-75, then Turnpike), I utilized the ACC the entire way, averaging between 70-75 MPH depending on traffic flow. I drove through a tropical disturbance that was hovering and developing over north Florida, fueled by Gulf tropical storm moisture...blinding rain for 2-3 hours, at least a dozen cars (Corvette, Camaro included) had slid off the road into surrounding woods and ditches, pretty harrowing driving conditions. (And yes, I slowed down for the rough parts where visibility was cut down to nearly zero) The FFH averaged 40.7 MPG for the entire trip, utilizing about 23% EV miles. Handled wonderfully in the rainy conditions - never felt unsteady or even any hydroplaning. The driver's seat was amazingly comfortable for the entire drive - no aching back despite my limited rest stops. For the return trip a week later, I set the ACC at 67 MPH. The posted speed limit was generally 70 MPH throughout the trip, so I figured I would test the speed difference in MPG performance, plus I would have the additional benefit of not having to worry about speeding tickets. It was definitely the right answer. I completed the trip with a 47.5 MPG average, utilizing 30% EV miles. I marveled at seeing the SOC full much of the time, especially coming off the interstate at an exit. She seemed to purr in EV mode forever during the fuel or rest stops. I noticed numerous times where the discharge/charging arrow was neither up nor down - had never seen that before with my city driving experience. The Adaptive Cruise Control definitely got its chance to finally prove itself to me. It made for such a worry-free drive, spaced my distance perfectly, and I never had to worry about looking out for highway patrol. (And they were definitely out in force both coming and going) And another note - I used the air conditioning full-time on both trips. Overall, after putting more than 2000 miles of highway driving on this trip, my lifetime average only dropped from 48.3 MPG to 47.4 MPG. Had I kept the speed down on the way to Florida, I would have fared even better. Before the PCM update, I was counting on maybe 35-42 MPG for the trip, and that my lifetime MPG would drop precipitilously into the lower 40s. Didn't happen. One other interesting thing I have noted. Since i have been back, I've seen several commutes closer to 60 MPG now. I've been averaging 52+ MPG overall so far on this tank with only city driving. Don't know if its the PCM update "break-in period", whether Vicki's just glad to be driving in the city again, or maybe she just needed a Florida vacation break...but I am very happy with this car after 8 months. :yahoo:

LOVE 26. seeing the absolutely full SOC in highway driving (especially upon exiting the interstate) and STILL getting 47 MPG 27. going from Orlando to Houston and only stopping once for gas 28. no aching back after 1000 mile trip, despite minimal rest stops - very comfortable seats 29. Adaptive Cruise Control !!! Set and forget. Set it slightly under speed limit and didn't worry about speeding ticket either. Great stress reducer!
