Program TPMS on 2013 FFH

Does anyone know if this tool will work on the 2013/14 FFH? I just put my stock/summer tires on my car today and the shop charged me $40 to re-program the tires. If it's going to cost me $80 a year to program the tires everytime I switch them. I might as well buy one of these tools.

I don't know if the programming works the same way but I do know that once the wheel with TPMS is known to the car you don't need to do it again.

Edit: cool if the trick with the hazard light works it's really simple. The directions in the OM are really complicated.

 

When I ordered my winter tires I also bought the TPMS tool for $45 but when I had my winter tires installed they did the registration / learning as part of the install for free ( the entire wheel exchange was free at PepBoys ).

 

Just two weeks ago I switched back to summer wheels but I did it myself ( wasn't ready for another round of damaged rims ) and the car and the TPMS is perfectly fine.

No relearning no registration nothing I pretty much spend the $45 for nothing.

 

Anyway you will only need the tool if a TPMS sensor is replaced which should be done by the dealer that installs the tire.

According to this website, yes, it works with the 2013/14 Fusion and MKZ. :)

So, the wheels don't need to be retrained after a tire rotation? How does the system know the right front is now on the right rear without training it?

No I didn't have to do anything. Maybe the wheels are back to a spot they where before but that would be pure luck.

I don't believe that this matters anyway as long the tire pressure is similar / the same between front and back. The website you linked states that only for vehicles with different front / rear tire pressure you need to re-teach the TPMS per wheel after rotation.

If the car had the ability to display the actual tire pressures on the display it would matter. Unfortunately the car only has a pressure too low warning icon so it doesn't matter where a tire is installed.

The computer does monitor tire pressure in each wheel and knows which tire is where. If you rotate tires and don't retrain the system then those values might be off. If you know those PIDs you can show pressure in each individual tire on a ScanGauge or in the Torque Pro app.

So nobody on this site has this tool and tried it? I think it's a no brainier to purchase one at $45 if it's just to program the tires when you rotate them.

 

The link that Steve posted has the instructions on how to get into the training mode and it sounds more complicated than what the Youtube video shows. I guess I will try both procedures and see which one works. Next time I'm at the dealership I will give them the product number and buy one.

 

On another note, I'm pretty sure you can only have 4 tires programmed into the computer at any given time. If you just switched your tires over you might not get the warning light right away. It will take some time to acknowledge that your sensors are no longer reporting the pressure to the computer. I asked about this when I was in the market in getting snow tires. The dealership and other tire shops all said the same thing.

After going back to my summer wheels I was waiting for the warning message to pop up but nothing did happen and hasn't for 3000 miles. ;)

 

I also read somewhere that people noticed the same thing on their cars when switching tires.

 

I have the tool but so far I didn't need it.

 

Ok just because I wanted to try the hazard light approch I went outside to check. I tried a few time but I couldn't get the video trick to work.

 

If someone knows how this works on a FF 2013+ please do share. I truly believe there is an easier way otherwise the guy that installed the wheels couldn't have figured it out so quickly based on the OM.

After getting my winter tires back onto my FFH I got a TPMS fault during this mornings drive. Took a few miles for the car to throw the error.

 

The trick with the hazard lights on top of the post didn't work for me. Cycling the key from OFF to ON 6x with stepping on the brake panel before starting and after the first 3 the went into the teach mode.

 

It starts with the front left and goes clockwise around the car. With every correct reading the car honks at you and continues with the next wheel. When every sensor is set the car honks again and shows a learning complete message on the left screen.

So what's the part number of the tool you have? Is it the same as the one in the video? It's good to know that it works by cycling the ON and OFF with the brakes. I will like to get the tool purchased before I get my winter tires put back on.

I can double check tomorrow but I would say it's the same tool. I bought with the tires from TireRack @ $45.

 

I will also known for sure if the re-teaching helped to clear the error. It went away after the teaching process.

So you have a second set of TPMS on these rims? If so, then your teaching will solve the error, you just had to let the car know it has new sensors. Pretty nice that for $45 it saves you a trip to the dealer to get them reset.

Yes I do but the interesting thing is that when I put the summer tires on in the spring I didn't have to re-teach the wheels.

 

I believe that summer wheel TPMS sensor have been at each position or at least at a position the have been before so the computer knows them.

 

As for the winter tires I rotated them front to back and back to front and that is what the computer didn't like so I had to re-teach the sensors. Maybe next year they will be fine since they go back to last years position.
