Tips? Looking into used 2013 ffh

Recommended Posts

The 2013 was the first model year for the 2nd generation of the Ford Fusion hybrid. Many cars have lots of teething pains for the first model year and even the second year. You may experience fewer of these new model problems if you look for a used 2014 or 2015 instead of a 2013. I learned this lesson the hard way when I bought a 2012 Ford Focus and will never do it again.

We love our 2013 FFH and have had very few issues with it. We easily get 40+ mpgs and drive both highway and city streets. Check it out, test drive it both on city streets and highway and see what mpgs you get, The build date of the car is in relation to the issues these cars had. A later date appears to have less issues but some of the early built cars were fine.

If you have the VIN you can check to see if there are any outstanding recalls on the etis site.

Any other questions, ask away.

I think those that were the first recipients/watchers of the 2013 SE Hybrids would agree that there seemed to be more TSBs and claims on the forum regarding the Job 1 (built before Jan 2013) Fusion hybrids than the Job 2 (built Jan-Jun 2013) -- however mine was built in Dec 2012 and I drove it for 35k miles and it was a great car! When I sold it in Dec 2013, the lifetime MPG on the dash said 50.9 and the real calculation (based on fillups recorded on fuelly) was 47.8 (or maybe 48.7, one of those). But to get an idea as to what others experienced in real-world MPG, go to fuelly.com and filter onto the 2013 Fusion Hybrids (below link shows 160) and see how others did for MPG.

If I were in the market for one I would definitely consider a Fusion Hybrid, but use the ETIS link noted above to check build date and for outstanding field service actions.

Good luck!

The specific problems were:

1 Oil leaks around the transmission.

2. Noises from the drive shafts

3. Moldy aromas from the AC

4. Early transmission failures.

All of these could be fixed under warranty but it is difficult to check to see if they apply to an individual car. If the car wasn't among those with these problems or if they were fixed, it's OK. Numbers 1, 3. and 4. could be big repairs involving dis-assembly or replacement of the transmission or complete replacement of the ducting behind the instrument panel. The earlier generation 2010-12 did not have these problems and MPGs are only 4 mpg less. They are completely different models but use the same concepts.
