My husband and I are considering our first Hybrid which is the Ford Fusion Hybrid. I am curious if the 2014 gas mileage is as good as claimed? If you own it, what is your opinion? Please give us any pro's and cons. I appreciate the information :) .. I own a pet walking business in NJ and really need a fuel efficient car.

Is it possible to get 47 MPG? Maybe but not often and not easily.

 

I'm still testing mine; since it is new I don't have good data for "after breakin" but it is already obvious that "normal" driving won't product anything close to that number.

My salesperson said more like 43. So far, I'm almost making that sometimes.....as displayed by the onboard computer.....but it probably is off on the

high side too.

 

Having said all that, I really like my Fusion and would still be happy with it if I could get a "real" and consistent 40. I think that is likely possible.

 

Others who have had theirs longer will have better data.

Scientific sampling techniques, however, says you should throw out the top 10% and bottom 10% of the answers and average the remaining 80%. :)

 

NOW.......if most of your travels are in town, at speeds below 60 MPH, and you don't need a LOT of space.......the Prius C is an excellent little car.

I have one of them too and it looks like I will be able to average in the mid-50's with it.

The mileage drops off rather drastically at highway speeds though; down to the low 40's where the Fusion would be.

Yes it is. Just this evening, coming back from dinner, 11 miles 53.8 mpg. I reset my mileage just this last week for Spring-Summer driving and I'm averaging 45.9 so far. Plenty of +47 mpg driving.

 

I'm sure you will get the hang of driving your car to obtain mkaximum mpg.

On websites where owners can post their mileage, the '13 and '14 Ford Fusion Hybrids tend to average around 40 MPG. Whether you get more or less than that will depend on a variety of factors with your driving circumstances as well as how much effort you're willing to put in to get good MPG. If you try, you'll see 47 MPG or better some of the time. Getting it in the long run is difficult, but possible.

 

I would say evaluate the other aspects of the car that matter to you (comfort, handling, looks, safety, etc.) and, if you'd be happy with something in the ballpark of 40 MPG, it's likely to be a good car for you.

 

Edit: Also note that other hybrids will tend to fall short of their EPA ratings, too.

I agree with SteveB there are enough MPG threads already but just to throw in my stats for my FFH here you have it.

 

 

This includes multiple cross country roadtrips which totaled roughly 13k miles in pure interstate driving. The stats above are real gas station data not car display.

Of course SOMEBODY will chime in and say "Sure it's easy to get 47" and it is.....for short trips, maybe even some medium ones but it is virtually impossible to get anywhere near that over the long term. Many, many, MANY owners have confirmed that.

 

You can not believe the displayed mileage.

 

The person who posted his chart is only getting 39, long term average.

 

Leading someone to believe that they can easily and consistently get a true average in the high 40's is pretty close to lying to them.

 

But yes, this has been covered many times before. No need to go over it all again.

It's a small commitment once you love the Fusion for it's many other qualities. I still think that the really good FE for a car that rides and looks this nice is just the icing on the cake.

For the most people it becomes addicting once you start playing the MPG game. You don't have to and still get better gas mileage than most other "regular" cars.

After the new car smell has worn off a bit you will be surprise how well you can do even without watching all the displays like a hawk.

For example I was a bit in a hurry yesterday morning and I was really surprised to see 50.4 MPG for my 37 mile commute.

Check out our Fuelly tanks for our first FFH and the current one. The first one averaged 46.6 MPG in our regular driving and about 44 MPG on our two road trips totalling 9000 miles of interstate driving. We averaged around 40 MPG in the frigid MN winter and 53 MPG in summer. You'll get better MPGs in a Prius, but the Prius isn't as comfortable or as nice inside and it lacks a lot of features that are available on the Fusion.

I pinned a thread under the MPG section, show your fuelly. There are 3 pages of users who posted theirs, so you can get an overall view of what people are averaging. FWIW, I estimated the 13 FFH to get between 38 and 43 MPG based on 7 years of Hybrid ownership, with Prius, Camry and now 3 Fusions. My HyTi hit the nail on the head. It gets between 38 and 43 MPG. YMMV based on the roads you travel and the speeds you drive.
