gkinla Report post Posted December 13, 2013 (edited) Yes I did post a thread, it's a very easy $900 swap, but it may have been on the BOF. I'll see if I can find it and post a link. The lights are a direct plug and play except for the main light. The ring/halo light is on full time but at night but the main operates just like the SE. I found wiring digrams for the SE and the TI, the difference wasn't very clear. I think the lights are driven by a programmed module, I haven't taken the time to talk with a Service Technician to see if the lights be reprogrammed like a TI. Although, this way a lot of light is thrown to the rear and makes the SE very visible at night. I kind of like it because it makes my SE a little more custom. Has anyone come across Ti lights in a junkyard yet? I'd do the swap if the price premium for the Ti lights was only $100 or so more than what I could sell the SE lights for. elle Report post Posted December 14, 2013 I have now owned my 2013 FFH SE for one year. I drove it off my dealer’s lot without ever seeing a Fusion Hybrid in the flesh before that day (my wife didn’t think that was a smart thing to do). I knew I was taking what is usually a big chance by purchasing one of the first vehicles off the production line of a totally new car, but I had done a lot of research for 10 months, and I felt the odds were in my favor. The FFH is my first hybrid. I never even considered a hybrid before last year, and I still wouldn’t be caught dead in a Prius. But Ford has made me a convert by producing a hybrid disguised as one of the nicest looking, highest tech vehicles available. And it was within my $34K budget. How many times you may have to take a new vehicle back to the dealer to correct problems is a fear most car buyers have, and it is a good gauge of the quality of a car. This is a list of my dealer trips in 12 months:Updated to the latest MyFord Touch software. Had dealer check for the cause of the Battery Saver message. Nothing was found wrong, battery was charged, I did not leave happy. Had a total of six TSBs and updates done at one time.(For the first two trips, a shuttle took me to work and picked me up. For this third, a loaner car was provided.) 4. Had Illuminated Door Sills and Ambient Lighting installed (the only time I had an out of pocket expense). During these trips I tried to keep the sales and service people updated on the information I have learned from this Forum. This probably contributed to the VIP treatment that I felt I received on my last two trips. Not bad for a brand new car. During my first 9 months of ownership, I averaged 37.2 mpg. The last three months have seen a 43.4 mpg average. After 12,200 miles, the FFH is like a fine wine. It gets better with age.I know I could come close to or match the EPA 47 mpg if I never drove over the speed limit. But for me, that’s never going to happen. I have, however, lowered my average speed by 5 mph, and I’ve surprised myself by being happy with that. If I had been driving my previous vehicle, a 2004 Chrysler Pacifica, I would have spent over $1,600 more on gas over the past year. That fact makes my very happy, but everything about the FFH makes me a happier person. One of the best feelings you can have is knowing you’ve made the right decision, and there is no other car on the planet that I wish I would have chosen instead of the FFH. Although I know there are other factors involved, I truly believe that purchasing the FFH has made me a better person. My FFH is a White Platinum SE with Dune leather interior (Equip Group 502A), moonroof, MFT Tech Package, Nav, 18” Luxury Wheels and Rear Sensing. I will probably be happily driving my FFH for the next eight years. If I were to buy another one tomorrow, however, the only option I would add would be the Push Button Start, which wasn’t available for the SE at the time of my purchase. I still wish Ford would make the new 10-way adjustable passenger seat an option on the 2014 SE and not just the Titanium. They should at least make a manual height adjustment available for the front passenger. In many cases, this adjustment would probably only be done once, just like the tilt adjustment on my steering wheel.I’ll never qualify as a hybrid “enthusiast” since I’ll never: 1) keep track of my mileage with each fill up, 2) buy a ScanGauge, 3) try to drive over 600 miles on a tank of gas, or 4) post a picture of my MPGs on the car’s display. But I do think I fit in with the majority of FFH owners who just love driving their Fusion Hybrid, and get great gas mileage as a side benefit. The FFH is a “luxury” car, but doesn’t qualify for that category since it doesn’t cost enough. Its fold down rear seats are a major benefit for me. I use them a lot, and if the FFH didn’t have them, I probably would have purchased a crossover vehicle instead. If you are already in the habit of driving with smooth acceleration and smooth braking, you should have no problem getting good mileage from your FFH. Learning to back off the gas peddle at the right time to get into EV mode is probably the major new additional habit you need to develop. In the category of vehicles that people can afford, I feel the 2013-14 Ford Fusion Hybrid is the best choice a driver can make. First year FFH owners have had to deal with what really are minor quirks. Anyone purchasing the 2014 model should be getting a near perfect car. Great review. I have to say that my experience is quite similar to yours. I've had a few trips to the dealer; nothing major, and everything has been taken care of. Mileage is reasonable and has improved with the upgrade to the software. Overall, I'm very happy with this car and I could certainly see myself keeping it for quite a while. 1 hybridbear reacted to this
elle Report post Posted December 14, 2013 (edited) Thanks, B25Nut. This kind of post is helpful to a guy like me that is still researching and contemplating buying a FFH. I am still concerned about long distance highway driving and specifically if this car has adequate power for long interstate uphill grades. A post from Eddie Sessum a few days ago described how he had to pull over on the side of the road because his MKZH did not have enough power to merge concerned me a lot. Thanks again for this post. I live in Sacramento and my father in law lives in the Sierra Nevada Foothills, so long trips up the mountain are pretty frequent. I've never had any problem getting up the hill in the Fusion Hybrid, even though some of the grades are pretty steep. I'd say if someone is barreling down on me on an uphill grade, they are probably going too fast. Edited December 14, 2013 by elle

hybridbear Report post Posted December 15, 2013 (edited) Our one year story is perhaps a bit more complicated than most... But I'll start from the beginning. Back in early 2012 my wife and I decided that looking ahead a few years down the road it would make sense to buy a new car rather than continually buying used cars and dealing with their repair issues. I really liked Saabs and had owned a couple but they had many maintenance issues and cost us thousands of dollars a year. Between the extra gas and the maintenance cost you could just about pay for our new FFH. I had always liked hybrids going back to when the Insight and Prius were first introduced. I was 10 years old in 1999 when the Honda Insight first went on sale here, but I was interested in hybrids and efficiency back then. I guess it's the efficiency that captivated me. Back in 2007 when I was replacing my Chrysler LHS that was having lots of issues I looked at buying a used Prius, but they were all too expensive. I also liked Saabs for some of their quirky nature and I ended up buying a 2002 Saab 9-3. Thus, my hybrid journey didn't start back then. Now we return to 2012... I really liked the new TCH and went and test drove one. In 25-30 minutes of mixed driving I got around 45 MPG in the TCH. At that point our plan was to buy a TCH sometime late in 2012 or early 2013. Then as the summer went on I began reading about the new FFH that Ford was releasing. As more and more reviews and articles came out I became more intrigued by the FFH. I began reading all that I could find about the FFH and comparisons to the TCH. I began making a detailed list of things to check out on both cars in a test drive, features that we really liked on past cars and wanted to make sure we had or things we didn't like and wanted to avoid. Some examples are: do the seatbelts ratchet where they won't pull out anymore until you fully release them? (this is a major annoyance and something the TCH does but the FFH doesn't) Is the area where my knees rest while driving padded? (our Honda Accord was not comfortable for long drives because it was all hard plastic, another area where the FFH excels) Is there an indicator when windshield washer fluid is low? (something sadly lacking in both the FFH & TCH, I was used to this on all our Saabs and on my Chrysler and on all the Chryslers my parents had owned growing up, even the cheap Chryslers would tell you when your windshield washer fluid was low) I had multiple pages of items to check out and a list of pros & cons for each car. I watched constantly on Ford.com for inventory tracking to see when a FFH would arrive in Minnesota. I called all the dealers that showed they had one inbound to try to find out when it would arrive. Finally one arrived. It had the exact same features as our black FFH that we ended up ordering. The dealership let us do an overnight test drive. We setup the TCH test drive for the same day so that we could do a direct comparison. We were able to park both the TCH & the FFH side-by-side in the underground garage at our apartment to go back and forth from one car to another examining them. My wife & I both took a vacation day from work to do this. This was a major purchase and we knew it was very important to make the right decision. Since fuel economy was important we took both cars for drives on routes we actually drive. We did a freeway stretch to get an idea for road trip fuel economy at a constant speed over long distances. We also drove from our apartment to two of our most common destinations to test fuel economy on those routes. We also did a good chunk of city driving to see how the car would do in the city. Our ultimate conclusion was that the FFH & TCH would get the same MPGs. The TCH was better on the interstate at high speeds, but the FFH was better in the city. We drove 50+ miles in the TCH and got just shy of 47 MPG. We drove about 90 miles in the FFH and got just over 46 MPG. Considering the inaccuracies of dash MPG readouts we determined that in our final decision we would assume that both cars would use the same amount of gas. Later that afternoon we returned the TCH and tried to negotiate down the cost from the Toyota dealer. The dealer wanted just a few hundred dollars less than MSRP and wasn't willing to budge. Since the Toyota was inferior in our view we only would've bought it if Toyota had been willing to beat the price of the FFH. Since they weren't we crossed the Toyota off the list. In the evening we brought the FFH back to the dealer. Coming in I had researched our Honda Accord Hybrid and knew what a fair trade-in price was. The dealer with the FFH was unhappy that we had X-Plan pricing because they were planning to sell this car at a $2-3k markup MORE than MSRP. They low-balled the trade-in offer, offering us about $3k less than what I considered fair. We walked away. We had put down a deposit on this FFH and planned to buy it. However, at that price I told them we would be selling our car privately. I asked for a few weeks to try to sell our HAH privately and they said that was fine. We agreed that if we hadn't sold the HAH by the end of the month that we would figure out something else. A few days later I get an e-mail from the finance guy saying that they sold the FFH we had a deposit on and that they would find us a different car. I was incensed because we had put down a deposit and I had in writing from the salesman that they wouldn't sell the car to anyone else and that we had until the end of October to make a decision. The salesman apologized to me and said that the dealership manager was not willing to sell this car for X-Plan when they could sell it a few grand above MSRP so they sold it even though I had a deposit on it. I gathered up all my documentation of how we had entered entered into a contract that we were going to buy the car and I reported them to Ford Corp, the MN Attorney General and the BBB. I also left a negative review on dealerrater.com describing what they had done. At this point I set about finding another dealer to do business with. Since this dealer had tried to screw us on the trade-in, and since we hadn't been successful in selling the car privately, I decided I would find a new dealer based on who would give us the most in trade and then we'd use X-Plan to order a car exactly how we wanted it. I started shopping around and we found the dealer who ended up selling us our FFH. They were willing to give us a fair trade-in value, $2k more than the other dealer offered after many negotiations. And this dealer was willing to give us that value 2 months from now when our FFH would arrive! They also would sell us the car at invoice price, which beat X-Plan by a few hundred dollars. Thus, we ordered a Tuxedo Black FFH with the exact same features as the silver one that had been sold out from under us. We added the Luxury Pkg, moonroof and back up sensors and that was it. We wanted other options, but we were trying to keep the price down and we had heard a lot of bad things about MFT. At that point there were no other Fusions (gas or hybrid) around at dealers where we could have looked at one with MFT to see what it was like. The sales experience at the dealer where we ordered our car was excellent. The salesman was very nice and helpful. He wasn't pushy on any extras or on adding additional features. He kept us informed of the progress of our order from day 1 until delivery. The offending dealer ended up giving us coupons for free oil changes in compensation for their bad behavior. I got a call from the dealership manager who tried to sell me a car saying that they wouldn't do that again, etc. I told him that it was too late and that I already went somewhere else. In exchange we were given membership in their "Buy Happy" Program which includes 12 free oil changes over 3 years. Instead of taking delivery in October we ended up getting our FFH on December 17th. Right from the beginning we had issues. We had an issue with the grade assist on our California road trip in January. Then in February we had issues with the fuel system, first we had ice buildup in the fuel filler inlet preventing the little metal flaps from closing, second we had a bad purge solenoid canister which had to be replaced. We also had a lot of trim issues. One of the doors didn't line up and could be heard rubbing when opening or closing, the trunk didn't line up and was hard to close, there were gaps in some panels, the wrong shift knob was installed, etc. We had a clunk in the steering which was fixed with the TSB relating to the "cracking noise". We had a cracking tail lens that was replaced. And the issues just go on and on. Below is a quote from another thread when we recently considered the idea of trading in our FFH for a new one because of all the issues. More the issue now would be concern that we got a lemon. In the last week the Battery Saver messages have become a constant fixture when shutting off the car. I've also had sporadic warnings on the dash saying "Service AdvanceTrac" along with all the ABS/traction control lights illuminating. There have been a couple of times where I have started the car and the dash screens have remained black while the speedometer has lit up. And the MyFord center console screen has been freezing a lot and having glitches. The back up sensors have failed to make noise a few times even though the dash screen shows they're on, and other times they've made this horrible sounding scratchy noise instead of beeping. All these issues tend to go away when I shut the car off and restart, but there has been one issue or another almost daily. This hopefully is all rectified with the replacement PCM. Total, including this trip, our car has spent 28 nights at the dealer in 11 months. The dealer still didn't install the new trim pieces, but at least they finally fixed the trunk squeak. The battery saver messages are not. When I put the key in leaving the dealer I got the BS msgs, when I got home I got it too as soon as I shut off the car. Pretty soon we could probably start pursuing a lemon law claim since the MN law calls for 30 days out of service in the first 18 months as the basis for lemon law. However, from what I've read of others' experiences, we likely wouldn't get hardly any more money than what we'll get on a trade-in and it's a lot of hours to make the claim. My time is more valuable than the potential gain from a lemon law process. At this point, trading in the car for a replacement would be more out of concern over having a lemon and less about new features. It's a gamble of spending a little bit more now to get extra features and go back to 0 miles, but the desired payback that would make it worth it is getting 7+ years of largely problem free operation. Even if we bought an extended warranty for our FFH to cover the cost of those issues for 7 years, it still eats up a lot of time taking the car to the dealer all the time. The 28 nights that our car has spent at the dealer have been 9 different trips. Each trip is 32 extra miles on the FFH plus the miles driven by the dealer. By the time I add in the gas they waste it's at least 1 gallon of gas and 40 miles each trip. Considering that the most recent trip had me drive out to the dealer, sit around for an hour waiting for a car, then drive the FFH to work so that they could drive it back to the dealer that trip was close to 100 miles and 3 gallons based on my trip odometer pics. So, these trips have all been outside of other dealer trips for oil changes, etc and have cost us 11 gallons of gas plus 420 miles extra on the car. Most of the rentals have only gotten about 20 MPG so the trip to & from the dealer in each rental is 1.5 gallons plus the additional gas burned getting 20 MPG instead of 50 MPG. Thus, each rental has cost us about an additional 2.5 gallons while driving it compared to the gas we would've burned in the FFH. So that means 4 gallons times 9 trips and we have 36 extra gallons of gas in rentals. That means the cost of these trips has been 47 extra gallons of gas and an extra 420 miles on the odometer of our FFH. 47 gallons of gas times $3.30/gal equals $155.10 in gas cost because of these issues. Then add in the cost of my time. Each time dropping the car off at the dealer takes at least 1.5 hours round trip. Each time picking the car up takes about 1 hour round trip. 9 trips times 2.5 hours per trip equals 22.5 hours. Add in the extra hour spent on this most recent trip and we're at 23.5 hours. Add in all the hours I've spent calling the dealership to ask about when our car will be done, since they have never once called me, and we're realistically at about 30+ hours of my time lost to these issues. For example, when the PCM died on Wednesday, no one bothered to call me. My SA was off on Thursday, and no one called me. On Thursday I called the dealer to check on our car and was told that he was off and that no one else knew what was going on. On Friday I called to ask when our car would be done. I was put on hold while someone went to track him down. After spending about 15 minutes waiting on hold I gave up and called back. I was again put on hold while he was tracked down. After about 5 minutes waiting this time, the SA who answered told me that he was at lunch and that I should call back later. When I did finally reach him on Friday he told me that the PCM needed to be replaced. They ordered it on Wednesday, but didn't know when it would arrive. He hoped that it would arrive on Monday. He acted surprised that no one had called me on Thursday to tell me what was going on, and he apologized for not having called me on Wednesday. But, this is just one example of the headaches I've been dealing with on every trip to the dealer. To buy an extended warranty from Flood Ford would run about $2000 to extend out to 7/100k. But that really shouldn't be needed if we have a reliable car, but would be needed if our lemony behavior continues with this car... I would expect that most issues should present themselves within the first 3/36k if they're factory defects. Then, between 3/36 and 7/100 the issues should be quite few and far between. Then once you get beyond 7/100 is when issues will likely arise. I don't feel there should be a need for a warranty to extend my bumper-to-bumper coverage out to 7/100 because the most expensive parts (ICE, MG1, MG2, eCVT, HVB, etc) are all covered either under the 5/60 powertrain warranty or the 8/100 hybrid warranty. The concern about having a lemon is really what got me started in the first place at researching local inventory last week to see what was available. I figured that at the same time it would be nice to have more features. Until my wife reminded me of how much time I've lost to these issues I hadn't really looked at our car and gotten a bitter taste in my mouth. I love driving it too much. I'm emotionally attached to it... But, the more I think about it, the more I think that my time over the next 7 years is more valuable than the price difference to make this swap, provided that the white FFH would be more reliable. In the end we did end up trading in our black FFH on November 27th. It had 18,900 miles on it. This was about 10,000 miles of normal driving and 9000 miles from two road trips we took with it. The FFH is the second most comfortable car I've ever sat in, second only to the Saab 9-5 we used to have. We really enjoyed our two road trips in the car and look forward to taking more in the new white FFH. The build quality on the white FFH is noticeably better. The trim is perfect on this one. All the sharp edges that the black FFH had on the chrome trim pieces around the windows are flush on this car and aren't sharp. I've cut my hand open on the sharp trim pieces on the black FFH when washing it. The quality feels much improved. We've put a little over 500 miles on the new white one since 11/27. It feels so much nicer and we really love the additional features. It has every option. We're glad it does. Park assist, navigation, all of them. Now that we have them we really like them. The only things I don't like are the 18-inch rims, the premium paint color and the fact that we had to pay for the trunk cargo net and premium floor mats that it came with. The first year with the FFH has been an adventure. I've learned a ton about it, as can be seen here, here, here or here. Overall, my only regret is that we didn't buy one with more features in the beginning. Although, if we had spent money on more features in the beginning we wouldn't have bought them all like we have now and I'm really glad that we have them all now. I continue to highly recommend the FFH every chance I get. When we were buying our rubber floor mats I researched on Amazon and eBay so I knew exactly what the price was online. When the dealer claimed I couldn't get them cheaper online than their price, I showed them the online price. They agreed to match the online price after sales tax so I bought rubber mats at the dealer. I did this at both Ford & Toyota dealers. Thanks, hybridbear, for the very informative post. Your new one is a 2014, right? The new one is a 2013 as well, but a Job 2 car. A 2014 would have been out of our price range. The 2013s are currently heavily discounted by the dealers and we got $1500 more in Ford incentives since we were buying a 2013. I looked for a 2014 with less features but Push Button Start and didn't find any in inventory around here. We didn't want a 2014 because they don't have the Lifetime Summary. If a 2014 with PBS was the exact same price as a 2013 without PBS then I would've considered PBS to be worth the lack of a Lifetime Summary. When the 2014s are $2-3 grand more for the same features then there's no way we're getting a 2014. I'm confident that as a Job 2 car this one will be better. The black one was built in 11/2012, the white one in 5/2013. So the above theory about timing doesn't quite match. I have my wheels plastidipped Anthracite grey so the matte trim on those pieces fits pretty well. The only downside in my book is how it holds wax if you get any on there. Tough to get off.
