I always use voice commands. The biggest problem I have is that when there are people in the car, they want to talk and joke around with the navigation system while I'm giving it commands, and that will throw everything off. I have come close to strangling my husband over this a couple of times.

Duct tape works really well.

One of the reasons I special ordered my car is because I DIDN'T want the Nav system in the car. I love having a portable TomTom that is easy to use, and can be taken into a rental car when I travel, or someone else's car if I'm not driving. I had heard that the factory Nav system was not so reliable.

I like my Garmin too, and I didn't get the factory Nav either. I too remove my Garmin and use it for hiking. I made a plastic panel to set my Garmin in along with two switches for IT and for my radar detector. Works great for me!

Not a bad setup. I think I would that paid I little extra for some higher end switches. Maybe something with indicator lights. But if you were going for the work vehicle look, I think you nailed it.

 

Isn't it hard to see or use while you're driving? You must have you're eye off the road to even see it let alone try to input any data into it.

I don't fiddle with it much wile driving, I select my destination before I go, and it speaks to me too. Guess I'm just used to it, I've had it for years. I usually have a navigator / passenger too that helps. The switches.....well....they work and were free, guess I can upgrade when I find something better.

OK, solved the High Rolls delema. I thought "there has to be a way to find a location if the name doesn't work", turns out there is an easy way. I looked up the zip code using the browser on my phone and used the zip code entry in the Nav. It found what we wanted, just listed it by another name...

Once I started following the correct commands I had no trouble. At first I was adding more words than I needed to, making it harder than it was. I kept the cheat sheet above my visor until I got comfortable with the commands. I made a copy of the part of the owner's manual dealing with the proper commands.

The 3D mode was a nice surprise when I first saw it. Here are a few shots.

I wish I had a video of it. I take a windy ramp down to the lower level parking area. As I am going down the ramp in a circle, the buildings rotate such that it appears the buildings are on a lazy susan that is being spun around and shows all sides. It's pretty cool.

The Nav in my Hi Ti is better than the 2005 Honda Accord Hybrid that it replaced and I loved that Nav system.

The Nav in my 2007 Prius is a joke, I rarely use it because of it's quirks.

 

In short I think the Ford system is excellent love the ability to go to Mapquest, set a destination and download it to the nav via sync............

I agree with the bolded, but I don't like the fact that the nav creates it's own routes that differs from the Mapquest route ... :(

I had to go to a graduation party last week in an unknown area. The party was on a lake, I had the address and drove there. The navigation system took my to the other side of the lake! We had to ask Siri for directions, which told us we have to drive all the way around the lake to get to the house/party ...

 

I also tried Google Maps and if I asked for directions from my house to the party it would take me to the correct place, but once I was at the party and asked for directions (to the party itself) it also told me to go around the lake to the other side. Something's really screwy there and I can't only blame Ford for it.

What I dont like about the nav are the ding dings. OKAY I heard you the first time, dont need to repeat it a half dozen times! That gets old really fast, especially when on the highway. Yeah I got it keep to the left you dont have to keep reminding me for the next 3 minutes!

 

Aside from that, when setup correctly the Nav takes me on routes that are helpful. Finding the right route is a trick. Yesterday I drove from Algonquin to Countryside and to there, took the Eco Route and it took me down Algonquin to 290 to 8s. Got 49 MPG. On the return trip I put in the intersections by my wifes workplace and ignored the highway and tollway, and got a decent return of 48 MPG, but took me 20 minutes longer.

 

So from that I found the Eco route when setup to use Highway/Tollway actually comes out as fuel efficient. You just need to setup the nav preferences correctly.

Its a good idea to set your some address as a police station by your house, or just an intersection close to your house. That way if someone steals your car, they wont be able to use the nav to drive to your house :-)

That's caused by sloppy map making.

I live on a street where the house numbers range from 301 to 321.

The master map that Garmin uses allocated the street as if the house numbers went from 300 to 399.

It puts my house about 6 feet from the beginning of the street.

I have tried in vain for years to get the mapping updated.

Google maps points to the center of my property.

 

The car uses the same incorrect master map.

 

While the car is parked at your house have it learn the location.

Then give that learned location the name Home.

This won't be in the manual, but yes. If you have an Android phone, get the Send to Car app. You can look up an address on Google Maps, hit share and select Send to Car. The car will get the address and you can set it as your destination or your way point. It will calculate its own route and it might not be the same route that Google Maps found.

Good point, neod! I had read this same thing years ago, and as a result, I have "HOME" programmed into my GPS as the gas station on the perimeter of my neighborhood.

In addition, if you are going to valet park your vehicle, take the extra minute to separate your key from your house keys. I have read of unscrupulous valets that make copies of your keys while you are dining or shopping, get your address from your GPS, and take the opportunity to ransack your house while you are eating or shopping.

As a final security measure, I keep my car registration (in Florida, it is an 8" strip of paper that doesn't fit easily in your wallet) in the passenger seat back pocket so it's a little harder for someone to locate. How sad is it that we have to take these measures!
