Please help me decide!!

Recommended Posts

Okay, I have a ruby red hyti on order. They build date was pushed back from 4/29 to 5//13. It is exactly the car I want. I ordered on March 26. Now, the car I am driving has 104900 miles on it. The transmission was acting like it is wanting to go out. That is why I ordered this car. I've been babying the transmission since then, to get it to make it until I can trade it in. The dealer said they would give me 5000 for the car. They didn't catch anything wrong with the transmission, nor did they ask about it. They are selling the car to me at 35300. It has every option available on it, all the driver assist, safety features, technology...everything except moon roof. I think sticker is around 38000. Anyway, a friend drove my car the other night and got it stuck on a curb and stupidly, gunned it over and over to get it off. She didn't succeed in that, but she did succeed in killing my transmission. Took it to a transmission shop and he said yes, it needs a transmission and I should park it and not drive it until I am ready to trade in. That means I will have to get a rental for 30 dollars a day until the new one comes in, and I don;t know what my dealer will give me on the trade, because they will probably figure out something is wrong with the transmission if they drive it before sealing the deal. I could possibly get a used transmission installed for 1100, if the guy can find one. Then I could still drive it while waiting on my car. But, I have found a car exactly like I want on the ground but it is platinum white and has the moon roof. for 36500. So, would you get the white one, and try to trade the old car as is and see what you could get for it, would you fix the transmission for 1100 and then still be able to trade for 5000 and wait on the red one? Dang it...If I KNEW for sure Ford wouldnt push my date back again, and that I could have the car within a months time, I would probably fix the transmission and wait on it. Or rent a car and not fix the transmission and hope for the best on trade and wait for it. But if Ford pushes my date back again...................:(. I've had three white cars in a row, never had a red one, and always wanted a red one. But the platinum white does look good and it is on the ground now. Please, just give me some advice if you were in my shoes. I'm going crazy here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh my! It sounds like a decision only you can make ... Either way, it sounds like you're going to love some money on the old car (either at trade-in or on the new transmission). The White Fusion also costs more, so you need more money to get that one. I would go with the option that makes the most sense to you financially. Can you maybe borrow a car for a month instead of renting it at $30/day? Is public transportation or car-pooling an option?

If it was me, I don't think I would spend the $ on the new transmission .. unless it ends up being cheaper than securing transportation another way.

Neod, thanks for your input. I travel up to 400 miles a week for my job doing home health therapy, so carpooling or public transportation isn't an option. No one that I know will let me borrow a car since of course I wouldn't be on their insurance. So, I either have to rent one, fix transmission, go buy the white one, etc. I am definitely in a pickle. Ok, would you wait on the red (or blue in your case) in the same situation? The white does look nice, but will I always wish I'd have gotten the red. I know no one can answer that but me, just curious how you all would feel with giving up "your" color to get a car sooner, and maybe save a little on rental costs, etc. So frustrated right now! Wish someone could tell me if my car will really be built on the 13th, or will I be waiting months still? Hmmm. :(

I spent 35k + tax on my car, so I got the color I wanted. I think I would suck it up, fix the transmission, get full value on the trade-in and get the Ruby Red. If you don't fix it, you'll have to get the rental and still lose $ on the trade-in, so I don't like that option. I think that's the only way to lose the least amount of $...

PS. How valuable is the sunroof + garage door opener to you? I wouldn't buy a car w/out a sunroof ...

Here would be my personal thought process...

Timing - Here in Houston, I had a build date of 12-4-12, and the vehicle arrived by railcar on 12-18-12 (14 days), and then it took another 9 days before they removed it from the railcar, one day for prep. Delivered on 12-28, so a total of 24 days from the build date. I'm sure every experience will vary, but if you used that timing as an estimate, you would get "your" car around June 6. ( but no guarantee on a build date )

Cost - 30 days X $30/day = $900+tax/fees rental costs VS $1100 for a new transmission might be considered close to an even deal financially. Plus there's the uncertainty of whether the $5000 offer might be reduced further than the $1100 estimate you have received. ( I think I might ask )

Decision Basis - In the end, I would personally focus on whether I would want the white one with a moonroof for $1200 more, or the red one I originally ordered for myself. I would imagine myself driving the White one and then imagining a Ruby Red passing me on my morning commute. Would I be okay with that?

And one more thought...I would not let my friend drive my new FFH once I got it! :)

$30 a day for rental comes to $900 for 30 days. You will almost have spent the cost of the transmission and have nothing to show for it except transportation.

I bailed on my fully loaded Ruby Red Hybrid Titanium in favor of an on lot Ruby Red Energi Titanium with everything but Adaptive Cruise Control. I wasn't going to give up the Ruby Red for nothing. It even got me to spend about $5k more than planned to get the Energi that was immediately available.

I wish I had ACC, but I don't regret my choice. It seems like fixing the transmission might net you the smallest loss. That $5k for trade might go down more than the $1100 repair if you try to trade it with no working transmission. I think you should expect the same $5k after repairing it to net you $3900. The big unknown is if, in its current condition, you can get $3900 or more for it on trade. If it were drivable I'd say take it to another Ford dealer for a trade quote and see what they offer.

Call the dealer you ordered the car from and ask if they can help you out fixing the transmission in order to not loose the sale on the red one.

thank you all for your responses!! waiting for my dealer to call back and give me a price on the white one, then will decide if I'm going to wait. if I wait, I'll get the transmission fixed and drive it until the other one comes in. and no way will anyone drive the new one except me :)

I would go for the white one... I think it is the best looking color available in the Titanium.

There is no point in replacing the tranny. Dealers can do the at their cost so hopefully it should take that much away from your trade.

I wanted a platinum white HyTi and had to go with the silver due to availability.

Heard back from transmission guy.. 1400 to fix it. I'm not gonna do it. not unless when I trade it they say they won't give me but a couple thousand for trade. If they can give me a decent price on the white one, I'll get it and hope for the best on the trade and get a red car next time. :(

I have the platinum white hyti, and freakin love it. I thought I wanted the sterling grey, but when I finally saw the white in person and it sold me. I ordered my car and got everything on it I wanted. Personally I would go with white, because the majority of the time I'm enjoying the inside of this amazing car, not the outside.

I'd replace the transmission, drive 400 miles per day worry free until the Ruby Red comes in around mid-late June, then sell the car to CarMax for $5500 instead of trading it, and enjoy the new car you wanted and picked with your first choice color. Good luck in your decision.

Build time is always a crap shoot. I ordered my SE on 12/18/12 with an 8 week waiting period, so I was expecting delivery on or about 2/18/2013. On Jan 10, 2013, I found out that the holidays put a delay on the placement of the order, and was told it would be another 8 week waiting period. I started shopping for vehicles in stock, but there was nothing equipped exactly the way I wanted it in a color I would accept. Guess when my car arrived? 2/23/2013, only FIVE DAYS LATER THAN EXPECTED! My point is, your car could take longer or shorter than you anticipate, and renting could end up costing way more than you are planning.

If it was me, I would fix the transmission (can you shop around for a rebuilt one for less $$?) on the old car and keep it until your FFH is ready. In addition to the fact that renting a car could be more than you think, you also don't want to appear to be pulling a scam on the dealer who is buying the trade if the tranny doesn't work. They could end up canceling the whole deal and you might not even be able to complete the trade.

ok, I'm going to get the transmission fixed for 1450, then drive it until the new one comes in ...(yay! ruby red). then my ex is going to give me 3000 towards what the car is worth and we're going to let my soon to be 16 year old daughter drive it. so at least that way we won't be out looking for her a car.in a few months. whew..glad I made up my mind on all that! .now back to the waiting game.. .

Now thats a good idea! Why waste a new transmission on someone else!

WHOA, just had a really ugly bug run across my desk at work. Well it ran a short distance, now it runs no more!

the dealership told me they will still give me the 5000 even though the transmission is on it's last leg. I found out the transmission I was going to buy used was already out of it's previous car and the salvage yard had no clue how many miles were on it. they only warranty for 30 days, and they won't cover the 550 labor from the shop if the transmission needed replaced. so, I called someone else. he said he could get me a transmission with 40000 miles on it,and it would be covered for one year, labor and all for 1600 plus tax. well, I asked my ex to cover half the cost of putting it in and he said no, and he also didn't want to give me 3000 because according to his search online it wasn't worth that. so, now I think I'll take the trade since the dealer will honor it. I found a rental for 19.99 a day while I wait for my new car. the build date has been pushed back once again (another thread on that) so I'm still not sure how much I'm going to be out on rental fees. oh, and the white platinum that the other dealer could get? I am told sold. he and my dealer both say they can't find any loaded hyti s anywhere on the ground that are not already sold or sale pending. so I wait..:(
