New Owner - 2 days - Any advice for hybrid highway newbie?

Recommended Posts

At first I didn't have Eco-Cruise turned on since one review stated you could expect to have cars lined up behind you if it was engaged going up a hill. I found, however, that with regular CC, resuming the set speed or increasing it was done too harshly, which was obviously bad for MPG. The Eco-Cruise makes changes like I would normally do manually, so I keep it set on Eco all the time.

I got my worst highway mileage to date on a trip from Cape Coral, FL to Ft Lauderdale. No extra weight, just me. The entire trip ended at 35 MPG, so that's not the bad part.

I ran several tests. Started on cruise at 70 MPH. North to South was doing about 38 MPG, but when I turned east, it went down to 36 MPG.

Did a 20 mile test at 65 MPH on the eastern portion of trip. it wasn't much different from 70. Averaged about 36.6 MPG.

Did another 20 mile test at 75 MPH, and the efficiency nose-dived to 29 MPG.

I think there was a 10 MPH headwind. We'll see what the return trip does in a couple of days.

The trip ended at 35 MPG because of the city driving before getting on the freeway and after arriving in Ft Lauderdale.

The one thing I noticed was that I had a constant battery draw from "other". i disconnected my phone, turned off the radio and cancelled the navigation destination I had programmed, but the "other" draw continued unchanged. Any idea what that could be and how to minimize? My A/C draw was much less than that showing for other.

OMG!!!! That is just awesome. You got that doing 70 just blows my mind!

Keep in mind that my commute wasn't 70 all the way. I had about 13 or so miles in the 45-50 range so got a lot of EV driving done there.

Even so, that is very good for even a small amount of 70 MPH driving.

That still is very impressive. Do you think your results would be the same going the other direction, in case your results might be influenced by altitude change?

They aren't the same. Going to work is slightly overall downhill, while my return trip is more uphill. So far on average my trips to work are around 46 MPG and trip home is around 44 MPG...not a huge difference, but still experimenting with driving styles/speeds.

Okay, thanks for the info. That makes sense but I'm still impressed with your mileage. :-)

Hey all thanks for the information on my original post. Completed my trip Friday. And here are the results. Used Eco cruise the entire trip. On the first half - 366 miles, it was raining and dead into the west wind - 37.7 mpg. Second half sunny and dry - 285 miles - 40.09 mg. total ave 38.9. I was pleased. Cruise was set to 66 mph consistently. In construction zones achieved some EV but not much.

That's about what I got recently at 68 MPH. No EV also. At that speed I noticed RPMs stay at or below 2000. Above that and RPM was over 2000.

Just finished a 250 mile Sunday drive about 1/2 back roads and 1/2 highway. I am blown away by the fact I could go 70 MPH on the Interstate and average 40 MPH. A little Eco Cruise and manual accelerator action and 6 gallons of gas later and I am thrilled!
