Nick P Report post Posted March 21, 2013 I have a question for the smart fols on this forum. Is it difficult to completely fill the gas tank? I stopped for gas yesterday and it was my first fill up, so I was anxious to calibrate the mileage the Engage screen was telling me. I had travelled 455 miles on the first full tank and had about 1/8 of a tank left. I put 9.7 gallons of fuel in after topping it off following the auto shut off at the pump. That comes to 47 mpg but the dash reading was 41.5 mpg. The fuel gauge was reading just a hair below the full line so I'm thinking I didn't really fill the tank. Has anyone else noticed their tank not being full after the pump shuts off?
neod192 Report post Posted March 21, 2013 Have you had a chance to read these threads: http://fordfusionhybridforum.com/topic/5808-topping-off-the-gas-fuel-gauge-issue/ and http://fordfusionhybridforum.com/topic/6201-whats-the-most-gallons-youve-been-able-to-put-in-at-one-fill-up/? It seems like Ford has a healthy reserve when it says the tank is empty (about 2 gallons). 9.7 gallons is pretty low, but you weren't completely empty either :)

I checked them out and they were very helpful. Next time I'm going to pay more attention and fill up as slowly as possible and see what happens. I owned Fords in the 80's (T-Bird) and 90's (Contour) and I remember them being annoying to fill because you had to go so slow. Guess not much has changed. 1 neod192 reacted to this
acdii Report post Posted March 21, 2013 These new tanks arent venting as well as they should, probably due to CAFE/CARB/EPA regulations, so the vapor build up from filling the tank is keeping us from getting a full tank. After a few fill ups though the tank seems to take a bit more fuel before clicking off. Mine was the same way, and now at 1/4 tank it will take about 9.5 gallons at first click. hermans Report post Posted March 21, 2013 Have not had an issue filling the tank. I only fill up once a month and always have a few bars to empty. My last fill was 11.8 and I had two bars left. This time two clicks. 1 hybridbear reacted to this
jeff_h Report post Posted March 21, 2013 I stopped for gas yesterday and it was my first fill up, so I was anxious to calibrate the mileage the First fillup = I wonder if maybe there isn't a really accurate baseline for the DTE number since there are not a lot of miles on the car, as this is similar s my experience - only got 8.8 gallons on the first fillup. The last few fillups I've waited until the DTE was right around 0 (one was 12 miles past) and fillups were 11.5-12.0 gallons. 1 hybridbear reacted to this

I only filled up because it happened to be a convenient time and I was damn curious to calibrate the dash readout. I reset trip 1 when I filled up so I'll try again in another couple of week (and boy is it nice to say that!).

We only fill up once a month whereas before it was a tank about every 11 days, BIG difference.

LOL Even with my 10 getting the good that it gets we still fill once a week. Better than the twice a week we did before we got Hybrids.
ConFusioned Report post Posted March 25, 2013 (edited) We used to put 30 gallons of gas in our Suburban to go on trips costing over $100 and now its weird to put in 1/2 a tank and it only cost around $20. You feel like you're running out of gas but you're not. Edited March 25, 2013 by ConFusioned 1 hybridbear reacted to this
