MPG Happy Talk

Recommended Posts

Did something right today on way home from work. Usually the same trip nets me mid- to upper 40's with the rare low 50's. Must have been the no A/C and temps in the 70s.

What is your commute like? Highway? Local streets? What speed were you driving at?

The reason why I'm asking is because since I have the software updated, I am getting much better city mpg, but highway is not so great. I'm averaging 50-53 mpg on city trips, but anywhere from 38-45 on the highway, keeping it under 70mph.

All 2 lane roads through a couple of towns. Speed anywhere from 25 up to 60mph. Here's my elevation/speed profile to work. Haven't had the PCM update yet, scheduled for next Friday.

That makes sense then, if you had said you were on the highway going between 70 and 80mph, I would be trying to figure out what I was doing wrong! LOL!

OOOh its getting better!

Had lunch with my wife today, uphill mostly, got 40.1. Trip back to my office.

djminfll, I found that setting the eco cruise at 69-70 has given me better results since getting the update. This was my drive home yesterday.

and this is what the display looked liked while driving:

IMG_0029.jpg

I was able to keep the instant mpg above 40. At slower speeds this is what I was getting:

IMG_0015.jpg

It would cycle back and forth between 20 mpg and then up to 40, but would not go over 40 like it had before the update. For my car and my road conditions driving a little faster has been the ticket on the highway.

Current tank is right around 55 MPG and we're 600+ miles into the next 1000 mile challenge at 55.7 MPG so far.

Hybridbear: I'm in the market for a new vehicle and thinking about the Fusion Hybrid. Would definitely be interested in whether you'd recommend it: I have a very similar commute to yours: I commute 3days/wk from the Twin Cities down to Rochester (150 miles RT) down HWY 52, cruise set at 70. Love my current ride (08 Cadillac CTS AWD) and would love to spring for the new CTS or ATS, but just can't reconcile the higher vehicle cost, plus $5k per year in gas. That's a huge chunk of change over 5 year lifespan.

Anyway, would you recommend the Fusion hybrid it for that kind of commute? This purchase is all about the MPG for me, so curious if you really are getting 40mpg or better for that drive? How much of a mileage hit do you take in cold weather? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Check out the Fuelly link in my signature for more detailed information about our fill ups to see the effect of winter. Our driving is almost all city, very little highway. However, on 2 road trips we've averaged about 44 MPG each time. We've gone to Rochester twice in our FFH, back in April we drove down there in below freezing temperatures, strong winds and snow. On that we had the cruise set at 60 because of the road conditions and only got about 40 MPG because it was so cold and snowy. Our last trip in July we had the AC going as it was hot and got 43 MPG going and 51 MPG coming back to Minneapolis for an average of about 47 MPG going 65 MPH. You can see the big impact of wind on fuel economy in that trip. Cross winds are the worst. I periodically drive down to Owatonna for work and I've found that my mileage is significantly better driving straight into the wind compared to driving with a cross wind. Going 70 MPH you'll probably average 42 or so MPG in the warm weather and based on my experience about 36-38 in the winter weather. If the vast majority of your miles are that highway commute you would probably be safe using 39 or 40 MPG as a year-round average to do cost calculations. With that many highway miles you might be better off in a diesel. Have you looked at any diesels?

Cold weather seems to have a bigger impact on city driving compared to highway driving. Right now around the city we can average 55-60 MPG per tank and 50 MPG or so when we do shorter highway trips across the Twin Cities and such. In the winter it's a struggle to keep the tanks above 40-42 MPG because of the impact of the cold weather. One of the improvements Ford is claiming will be seen from the recent PCM update is improved fuel economy in cold weather. Our goal for this winter is to have a winter average above 42 MPG. If I exclude our road trip in January we averaged 40.45 MPG from delivery in December until when it finally warmed up in mid-April over 9 tanks of gas. From mid-April through now excluding our Canadian road trip we've averaged 51.91 MPG over 5 tanks of gas. For us the cold weather hit is about 20%, but that's because we do a lot of city driving. On the highway I've seen the MPG hit be about 10% decrease in cold weather. You likely see about the same 10% decrease in cold weather MPG in your Cadillac. In my previous Honda Accord and Saab before that I saw about a 10-15% drop in MPG in our cold winters compared to summer. The FFH is the same thing, it just feels more extreme because of the high MPG numbers. I've taken to converting my MPG numbers into gallons/100 miles as a way to better understand the difference between 50 MPG and 45 MPG. It's easy to do, just take 100/MPG and you have gallons/100 miles. Check out this thread for more information about how MPG is a misleading measure. It's smart on your part to be comparing vehicles based on their annual fuel cost on your commute.

I didn't get a picture of it but last night I went to the Twins game with a friend and driving the 11 or so miles to the stadium downtown I got 67.7 MPG!

Funny how I accidentally submitted a fuel up for the bike on Fuelly on the Fuzzi's record and it dropped my avg mpg. Car is more efficient than the bike, but the bike is more fun.

Filled up yesterday, 48.51 MPG. :) Velly nice

Kids in school today so we no longer have that long hilly drive, just a shorter hilly drive. Still seeing over 47 MPG. No way to avoid the hills though, going to take a different route tomorrow and see if there is a difference.

Consistency is good. This is what drove me nuts with that "other" car, never consistent good or bad,

This one however, Very good. Trip today on a dispatch same route both directions, a light caught me off guard with a 47% BS.

The extra 2/10ths was from driving around the lot trying to leave.

Got my first tank "over" EPA estimates. I quote "over" because I actually put 10.75 gallons which comes out to 46.6 MPG.

I did sit stopped in traffic for 45 minutes one day. I blame that for the .4 underachievement ;)

Still I'm pretty happy. It's difficult to tell if this was the PCM update helping, the 5000 mile break-in, or just the fact that about 450 of the 500 miles on the tank were 45mph country highway for the first time.

We made back home safely and today's MPG makes me smile even if its not EPA but its also around 20 MPH than the EPA speed avg.

Atlanta > Chicago

We filled up just south of Indianapolis and this trip result all the way home makes me even happy since I did the same drive when I got my FFH and got 39 MPH if I remember right and that was with an empty car.
