MPG Happy Talk

Recommended Posts

My 10 surprises me every so often, today, 45 MPG on the way home. I wasnt even trying either. Wondering if this tank of gas is summer blend as it seems just about every trip has been at or near 40.

Hubby managed 50.3 MPG on the drive home from work today (he's getting a little better at this). Best tank we've had was just a hair over 40 MPG.

This afternoon I came back from a short 2 day trip to Rensselaer IN my first longer drive.

128 miles total and I got 41.1 mpg driving at speed limit in IN which was 70 mph and around 65 mph in IL. You can't go much slower than that around Chicago if you don't wanna get run over by some maniacs.

I consider that pretty good for a car with now 880 miles on the odometer.

Got this on my way back from lunch. The trip there was pretty much all ICE and I got 14.8 mpg. 72.3 mpg avg is not bad lol:

Got gas on my way home and snapped this pic before getting back on the main road home:

This is one of my best commutes that happened this morning. I had 4.6L/100km yesterday, but forgot to take a pic. This converted to MPG is 50MPG

The last weekend I had a 32km drive and had 3.9L/100km (60MPG) I wish I had a chance to take a pic of that drive!!!

Cold engine city trip from last night. Great MPG. Outside temp was about 42 degrees. We're still unseasonably cold here...we should be in the mid-50s now every day and we're struggling to hit 45 most days. Today is only going to get to 40 :(

You beat me and with a cold engine... this one is from today's trip back from the dealer where I picked up the touch-up paint for the hood, so engine was warm (didn't do so well on the trip out there with engine cold and short trip, only 41MPG, felt like Fynack). But this good MPG trip bumped the lifetime avg up to 46.8.

My trip was longer! Cruise set at 63-65mph except the last couple miles. Finally hit 60° here! Hybrid drive was showing 50 mpg a lot. "Felt like Fynack" lol that could be a good phrase for when your mpgs are bad. "Only got 40 today, FLF."

My FFH was built on 10-24-13 and now has 5,700 miles. Two weeks ago my lifetime MPG was 35.4 when I took it to my dealer to deal with the Battery Saver issue. They claim all they did was charge the 12v battery, but I have seen better mileage ever since.

My 8 mile commute this morning got 42 mpg, my best ever. It was 60 degrees. This afternoon I did a 42 mile round trip at 70 degrees at speeds that varied from 60-73 mph. Going I got 47.2 mpg and the return 36.8, for an average of 42 mpg, which is the figure I was hoping I would eventually get when I bought my FFH. In our area I know I could never average 47 mpg without being a road hazard. The trip involved going down and up a steep grade. During the incline that led to going down the grade, I worked at depleting the SOC of the HVB as much as I could. I feel that having my display on Engage helped with this. The system at times wanted to charge the battery. When this happened I just increased my speed to get the ICE and the EV working together, which continued the discharge. Grade Assist kept my speed at 65mph going down the grade, which had the battery back to 100% charge after about 80% going down. I turned the GA off and allowed by speed to go to 70-73 mph for the last 20%.

On the return trip, I worked to get the SOC near 100% before starting the climb up the grade. Again, Engage really helps. In the past I took the grade at 70 mph, but it's not worth it. At 60 mph I passed as many cars as passed me. I did not use Cruise Control at any time. I only use CC when I travel long stretches of flat Interstate with little traffic.

It's been said elsewhere on this forum that we need to avoid whenever possible having the ICE on it own recharge the HVB from a low SOC. The last two weeks have verified that for me. It has made we wish that Ford sometime in the future incorporate a plug-in feature for the standard hybrid that would act as both an Engine Block Heater and charger for our smaller HVB. Starting off each day with the FFH in prime temperature and battery condition makes a big difference for those of us with relatively short commutes. This would also make the EV+ mode more advantageous.

It's amazing the MPGs you get with so few EV miles. That shows what the ICE can do under the right conditions. Fantastic!

Glad to see your MPGs are increasing.

I think it's a great idea to incorporate the EBH with a charge for the HVB so that we could always start out with a full charge. It would only cost a few pennies (probably less than $.10) to charge our battery from empty but it would totally change how the car would drive and would greatly increase MPGs. What a fantastic idea B25Nut

Great! Glad see I wasn't the only one to see the improvement when the SOC is high. When the ICE doesn't have to propel and charge, it really can be efficient. Had I known that from the start I might had gotten better MPG on my FL trip. Maybe the next owner of the 13 I had will have better luck with it, in city traffic it really did OK, it just stunk at anything over 45. Makes me wonder if what was found with yours was the same problem mine had. Good to see its getting better.

Pretty soon you will be saying, :baby: when you get a low one! LOL

Whats missing on that are the speeds. Highest speed, average speed. Really tells a lot when you can see that too. You have a lot of EV miles too and surprised to only see .1 regen miles.

I start out in town going 30 mph for 2 miles, then 50 mph for about 4 miles and then down a country road 30-40 mph the rest of the trip. You could probably call it city driving, but I go faster when I run into traffic. And I EV the battery all the way down and then charge just long enough to lose a couple tenths on my tank average then I EV again. In this warmer weather I can go 35-40 mph on half a charge for like 2 miles.

Add: Drove home tonight, no traffic but buncha red lights, 13.6 miles in 27 minutes, or about an average 30.2 mph, 58° and raining out, 52.4 mpg, tank average 50.7, lifetime 42.0.
