They've had these for 150 years, they are called TRAINS and TRAMS.  You should visit say Austria sometime.  It will look like the World of Tomorrow to you uninitiated.

Ridiculously inefficient, cluttering the roads and unnecessarily dangerous.  Autonomous cars are NOT going to happen.  I got stuck behind one in Ann Arbor once where they were testing them and it struggled to go over 15mph. It was truly irritating. Sure sure they can improve but here's the thing.  Who gets sued in an accident, the driver or the car maker.  The car maker of course and automobile manufacturers don't want that liability.
