NFURY316 Report post Posted January 21, 2022 Hi there, I have a 2019 Ford Fusion Hybrid and live in Toronto. The winters have been cold and harsh to say the least and of course I have to use the heater to keep myself from freezing to death. My issue is that when the heater is on, the ICE kicks in every 2 minutes or so even when the battery bar is beyond fully charged. With the heater running, it drops the engine temperature to just below the minimum line from the half way point causing the engine to constantly be on to warm up. The car also has some weird glitches while driving when the heater is running, most of the time using both the electric motor and engine for drive power. Anyone have similar issues and can help out or am I alone on this one? Thank you!
mwr Report post Posted January 21, 2022 I iive in a very moderate climate, but what you're describing is what I'd expect from an FFH in very cold weather. The ICE has to run enough to keep its temperature high enough to provide heat for the cabin heater, and in very cold temps I'd expect that to mean that the ICE would run a lot. dogo88 Report post Posted January 21, 2022 Sounds like typical cold winter behavior I experience in my 2019 FFH Titanium and in my prior 2010 FFH. Cold weather is not a hybrid's friend. Similar to very hot weather where the ICE needs to run more to charge up the battery for the A/C. In cold weather it needs to run more to keep the ICE in operating temps especially with heater use. Waldo Report post Posted January 21, 2022 (edited) Yep the ICE has to run to generate the heat for the cabin, that's the only way. The standard hybrid doesn't have an electric heater like the Energi does. And once the battery is full, it will generally try to run both ICE and battery power to keep some space in the battery for regen. My 2014 works exactly like this as well. I'll often shut off the heater when the battery is full and use up that energy before turning the heater back on. Cobra348 Report post Posted January 22, 2022 (edited) I'm in upstate NY by Lake Ontario. Today it hit a balmy 12 degrees F and the ICE was running a lot for heating. It's common in cold weather, as noted. My tracked mileage drops quite a bit in Winter due to this, snow tires and general driving conditions. Right now, I'm getting about 33 MPG combined.
