Poor gas mileage

Recommended Posts

I have a 2020 Ford Fusion Hybrid (2000 miles) that is getting 30 to 35 MPG. I do know how to drive a hybrid; having got 600 MPG with my 2015 hybrid. It doesn't matter if I drive with ECO on or off the results are the same.

Has Ford done something to change the way a hybrid is driven?

Is there something with the break-in?

Do I need to take it in for service?

Thank you for your help

The first few tanks are usually lousy.  I would track mileage using gas receipts and not the computer.  I have found a variance of as much as 3.5 MPG on a tank between receipt and car computer.

It is my contention they did change the way the ICE and HVB interplay - sometime in the '17 model area.  I've found that the ICE seems to stay on longer than it should even on even ground.  Typically I jiggle the cruise down and up a couple MPH to get the handoff to happen.  As for ECO vs non ... I use ECO mode all the time.  It seems to help.  Not having the HVB charge display for a guide to charge doesn't help either.

Am I getting EPA numbers?  Close but no cigar.  I'm barely hitting 40 combined over 25K miles on a '20.  I did better than that in my '15 and '17 models.  I am not a hypermiler by any stretch but I do believe they diddled with something.  When a '15 can get 52 MPG on a tank and a '20 (or '17) struggles to get 45, there is something wrong.

And before anyone asks ... I use OEM Michelin LRR tires in non-Winter months, am within 5 MPH of posted speed and try my best to use gentle braking and electric startup whenever I can.  I monitor tire pressure regularly.  During the Winter I know all bets are off and I'm okay with that.

I also had a 2014 Ford Fusion hybrid that I used to get at least 43 to 44 mpg I now own a 2020 that average's 37-38 and I believe the reason is because the 2020 charges the battery whenever you take your foot off of the gas pedal were as the 2014 only did it when you touched the brakes. The 2020 just slows down faster when you are coasting compared to the 2014.

My 2015 FFH charges the battery when I take my foot off the gas pedal. My overall (displayed) mpg at 93K miles is 46.0.

Depends, in Eco mode it does regen, but with Eco off, the regen is barely any different from switching to Neutral.

I can testify, that my 2019 FFH doesn't charge when stepping on the brakes, even if the ECO regen icon is shown.
The battery charge is lower than before the braking.
It could indicate that the system charges the 12V battery while regen braking.

The reason of a poor gas mileage is often a worn battery.

Mine has 94k miles on it and the mechanic left the AC running in the car, and some cells went below the fully depleted level.

Now the electric motor output only gets up to 15HP to the wheels (55-65MPH max, vs 75MPH before), and needs replacing.

Problem is no dealership is willing to do anything about it.

I am facing the same issue. It was running great before I got it serviced from ford. Like tank full it was going great like 900Km approx and every 15 days after i was filling tank. Now it is performing terrible even if the range shows 400km , and after 75 km drive it shows range 177 km.

And fuel efficiency readings looks ok 4.9L/100km

Take it back to Ford.

Maybe they missed something.

What service did they do?

The range is based on historical data, so if they reset something, it loses that data.  Are you ACTUALLY only getting 400km a tank, or is it just the display?  If just the display, then don't worry, it will take a tank or two to recalculate.
