Installing new console lid assembly?

Recommended Posts

The cover on the top of the center console of my 2015 FFH is badly cracked/ripped. I see covers for sale, with various instructions for replacing the fabric cover, but thought I'd be happier with just replacing the whole thing. I've found several sources for part # DS7Z-5406024-AB, priced about $75, example below. I'm wondering what would be involved in replacing the original lid assembly with this new one? FYI, I'm not much of a DIYer at all, but do have basic tools and at least half a brain.

I own a 2013 FFH, but my other car is a 2015 Ford Edge (which, to my understanding, is built on the same platform). I replaced the center console cover in the Edge and made a poorly cut video for YouTube:

It’s not terribly difficult if you have some plastic trim tools (cheap on Amazon) and some screwdrivers.

"Not terribly difficult" sounds like "difficult" to this very-much-not-a-DIYer.

I don’t want to talk you out of it or burst your bubble. There is some care and attention required. I assemble and disassemble computers for a living so I’m use to working my way through a logical pattern. As you can see in that video, the Edge required removing the trim from the console around the shifter and unscrewing things from the shifter all the way up to the compartment lid (including the infotainment screen). I would think the Fusion would be similar.

I watched your video and it seems to be for accessing the "compartment lid" in front of the shifter. I need to replace the top part of the center console which is behind the two cup holders so that would be a very different thing.

I did get a replacement part for it, but now need to access to screws (bolts?) that I don't see how to access. I know this is not enough information, so later today I'll take photos of the replacement part (and where the screws/bolts go) and also the currently installed part (showing the lack of access). Stay tuned ?

OK, here are a few photos. (1) and (2) are of the new replacement center console lid. (3) is the current one as installed. My issue is I can't find a way to access the end of those two curved bars on the installed one so I can remove it. Any ideas?

Mwr, were you able to complete the install?  Asking since I may soon want to do likewise  (if I can recover from sticker shock of what I believe to be the equivalent part for the FFH Platinum).

No, it had been sitting in my trunk for a year so I decided to have the dealer install it when I took it in for service a week ago. But they found a broken latch, probably from banging around in my trunk for a year. They think they can use the latch from the original one, but didn't have time to do all that then. So I have an appointment later this month to have it done.

Update. I took it into the dealer who said it would take an elapsed time of all day and cost me $300, because they had to remove the entire center console, etc. So I said "I'll pass" and left, then called a (very) handy friend who said to bring the car over to him. He did the whole job, including using the good original part with the replacement part, in 30-45 minutes. And no, he didn't have to remove the entire center console. My sense is that the dealer wasn't trying to rip me off, but just really had no good idea of what was required.

Excellent, and congrats!  Glad to hear the swap is easier that first proposed.  Think I've located the equivalent part for Platinum trim and am trying to get the distant junkyard to ship it.
