clicking, popping sound from steering wheel or column

Recommended Posts

My 2014 titanium is making a slight clicking or popping sound when turning the steering wheel. It makes the noise whether car is driving or just sitting still, but only when turning the steering wheel. It is just one pop/click sound. The noise is definitely come from the steering wheel or column area. Maybe the clock spring or bad bearing in column or bad column shaft ujoint?????? I know there is a recall for the steering wheel bolt replacement, but I am hoping the dealer does not tell me the whole column has to be replaced. Anybody else out there experience the same problem???

My ‘15 had a dragging noise but no popping sound.when I took it in for the steering wheel bolt treatment the noise ended. It’s a quick fix and I suggest you get it done.

Hope you’re loving your FFH as much as I do mine.

Thanks Larry, I am definitely going to take it in now for the steering wheel bolt recall. Hopefully it will solve the problem. The popping sound/feeling has been getting worse.

The popping is most likely the bolts are no longer tight and the parts are moving around as the wheel is turned. It would be more noticeable with the car not moving since the forces are higher in that case.

Hi Ikatze2,

I know this is an old post! but I purchased a 2013 Hybrid and have identical symptoms to what your post says. My model year is before the bolt recall and it sure doesn't feel like a loose bolt. When you went to the dealer did they just do the recall or was there something they discovered loose in the clock spring area making that clicking pop noise.  Appreciate any answer you can give!?
