2009 Fusion Hybrid

Recommended Posts

No but all things considered it's not that far from it either. For right now I think I'll stick to the V-6, but according to this they are making some decent strides. I can't wait to test out the new 6 speed tranny which is supposed to be flawless :shift:

What do you consider "not far from it"?

AKirby:

I think you won't have to worry about the power of the Fusion Hybrid's engine.

Consider the Nissan Altima Hybrid-- It also uses a 2.5L engine mated to the Toyota Hybrid Synergy Drive, and it's rated at 190 horsepower. That's pretty good, better performance in fact than their Altima 3.5SL (a 6-cylinder 3.5L engine).

The Ford hybrid system is very similar to the Toyota Hybrid Synergy Drive, using the same Power Split Device transmission, so the Altima Hybrid can actually give you a pretty good idea of what the Fusion Hybrid is capable of.

The fuel economy WILL be 34mpg in the city. That's because PSD-equipped cars like the Toyota Prius, Escape Hybrid, Altima Hybrid, etc. can shut off their gasoline engines at low speeds and run on electric alone, and the PSD system allows the car to recover energy that would otherwise be lost through braking. This process is called regenerative braking and has one additional benefit-- It saves wear on the brake pads. That's why the Prius doesn't need a brake pad change until 100,000 miles (not a typo).

The PSD transmission is a very nice and simple setup-- Just one single gearset, no torque converter, no clutch, no CVT belts, no gear-shifting wear-and-tear. Info on how the PSD transmission works here: http://eahart.com/prius/psd/

Frankly, after driving a PSD-equipped hybrid car with all those features like on-the-fly engine shutoff and regenerative braking, normal cars just feel downright primitive. :D

Welcome to the forum Quincy :shift:

Great information. I feel much better about the 2010 Milan/Fusion Hybrid. Had no idea that the brake pads lasted so long. Guess I won't be getting those ceramic pads for a while :hysterical:

akirby - Please keep your eyes open for the 2010 order guide - especially the Milan (if you sell both Ford and Mercury vehicles).

If production starts in December, the order guides should be out pretty soon. Let us know if the Hybrid is late availability. I was thinking about the Mariner Hybrid, but the Milan might be a few thousand cheaper and get slightly better city fuel economy.

Glad to find you on this forum. With gas prices as they are, I don't visit my old dealership buddies like I used to since I retired.

You must have me confused with someone else - I'm an IT architect, not a car salesman. But I'm sure the order guide will be posted here or on BON as soon as it's out.

Oops, sorry akirby. I am on the fordedgeforum and a dealership employee there goes by akirby. He has access to stuff we can't get to online and has been very helpful. My mistake.

I have an Edge and MKX currently but want a hybrid, so I joined this forum. I am retired from Ford (parts and service field operations) but don't have access to the dealer info websites any longer (sadly). I'm in Atlanta also. My son and daughter are in the IT fields (in Atlanta.)

Again, sorry for the mix-up.

That's me over on the FordEdgeForum, too (akirby). You just got the names mixed up - no worries.

I work for AT&T - where do your kids work?

Daughter works for Heidelberg (US operations) and son for Sability - on contract with Verison right now.

Are you X-Plan through AT&T? You are pretty knowledgeable about these vehicles.

Yep - I'm also just a long time Ford fan and magazine/website junkie.

Grey, what dealership did you retire from?

And it looks like the record is set straight, but the 2.5L HYBRID will be on the 2010 model Milan and Fusion that goes into production in December.

"Grey, what dealership did you retire from?"

I was Ford Corporate - last 10 years in the Atlanta Region. (Parts and Service Operations Manager). Zone Managers, warranty specialists, field service engineers and parts specialists reported to me - 5 states - 550 dealerships. But that was a former life - now I have a great job: Grandpa! :happy feet: :happy feet:

Dyoct - do you have access to the dealership/Ford website? I would be interested in any insight on the order guide and job1 timing you can provide. I believe a Hybrid Milan is in my future. I sure miss having access, but once you'r "retarred": you'r forgotten.

I monitor various forums on behalf of Ford's Consumer Affairs and I hope you don't mind me posting here. I've looked around internally and I can confirm that the Order Guides have not been sent to the dealerships. As far as I can tell they have not even been published yet.

Thanks fomocona - we appreciate you checking in and straightening us out when we guess wrong.

I talked with one of my fleet buddies and he says the order guides will be out in October and order input begins late October. Scheduling starts in late Nov. and production begins in late Dec. (?Plant changeover during the Christmas break?)

I suspect that the hybrid production might be delayed a bit as there are so many parts that must arrive that are unique to the hybridsd. Fingers crossed.

Once production starts and we begin to have hybrid owners, I hope we can create a forum subset for the Fusion and Milan hybrids. There are hybrid forums out there but you have to wade through Toyota, Honda, etc. to get to the good stuff - FORD.

Here are some questions to ask if you are thinking about ordering a hybrid:

Do you have current allocation for a Hybrid?

What month should I expect production based on your allocation?

Am I ordering any commodities that are in short supply -"at risk"?

Are their other Hybrid orders in the system ahead of mine?

What priority are you putting on my order? (Dealers assign priority).

What priority are you putting on other orders? (If they are all the same, earliest submitted gets first pull. If others have a higher priority, you wait.)

FYI, assuming the dealership has allocation, the dealers control the production scheduling more than Ford does by their assigning the priority. :headspin:

Z, if the Escape is any indication of how these things will roll out, unless you're buying from the Galpins/Bill Browns/Town & Countrys/Five Stars of the Ford world, the allocation is going to be very little.

I hate to sound pessismistic, but I'm not holding my breath here. Hopefully the wife's car can hold out, she wants a hybrid, but not an SUV and Chryslers plugins and hybrid assault are still years away (her family is Chryco).

I think the original schedule was this fall but it got pushed back to next year due mostly to powertrain development and supply but then got pulled up to December 08.One potential reason for the delayed Fusion Hybrid is due to the difference in battery size.

Looks like you very well might be right. http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/artic...190380/1001/BIZ

That article says Ford intends to produce only 25,000 Fusion Hybrids/Milan Hybrids per year.

Dang it, doesn't Ford realize if they want to make money off hybrids, they need to jump in with both feet? Toyota could never make a profit selling just a few thousand Priuses per year-- They had to sell a hundred thousand (and they did!).

Why is it that I get the feeling I might not be able to drive a Fusion Hybrid off a dealer's lot anytime soon in 2009 (when it supposedly goes on sale)?

WHAT? :drop: Are they crazy? Ford needs to push these cars and sell as many as people have a demand for them (and there WILL be a demand). If they put a limit on how many they make Ford will be shooting themself in the foot
